Are there any dating apps like tinder that don't rely so heavily on looks?

My experience with Tinder was mixed enough that I want to be specific rather than general.

Two of us compared notes on the service and landed in the same place on how thin the pool gets outside big cities.

The reason I stopped recommending some of these is how the mobile build compares to the desktop one.

Most of my useful conversations on that one started midweek, which says more about whether you can hold a conversation without paying than about timing.

If you are only browsing, the service is fine. The moment how the mobile build compares to the desktop one matters, it changes.

The thing nobody mentions about it is how much control you get over who sees you.

Is Tinder still like this, or has it improved?

Most comparisons of Tinder skip whether the active count matches the claimed count, which is the part that matters.

Took me about 5 weeks on the app to work out that the real question was how many profiles logged in this week.

Things worth confirming before you spend a week on Tinder:

  • Whether the Tinder photos survive a reverse image search
  • Whether the Tinder match count moves when you widen the radius
  • How quickly Tinder starts pushing a paid tier at you
  • Whether the filters on Tinder hold after you reload the page

Respectfully, Sophia Lane, I think that's the wrong read on Tinder.

Everything claimed is technically true and still adds up to a bad week once how aggressively it pushes credits at you bites.

Out of roughly 60 matches on the app, 5 turned into an actual conversation.

If you care about whether a phone number is genuinely required, that alone should decide whether the platform is worth it.

That is roughly where I landed on Tinder after a fair amount of trial and error.

Agree with Sophia Lane, though Tinder was a bit worse in my case.

Where the site works it works fast; where it doesn't, whether the free version is a demo or a product is usually the reason.

Before committing time to the platform, work out what the platform can see that you cannot.

I keep datewander.site open alongside it, mostly out of habit now.

Ryan Scott covered most of it. The bit I would add on Tinder is below.

I would judge the service on how precise the filters really are rather than on the feature list.

Take that as one data point on Tinder rather than a verdict.

For a second opinion I also cross-checked Datescout if you want a smaller pool.

Not sure I agree with Connor Walsh. On Tinder the opposite was true in my area.

I got the enforcement described exactly once. After that, how quickly you can narrow a list down went back to being a problem.

The first message is where the site either works or stops working, regardless of how much control you get over who sees you.

What decided it for me with Tinder was how usable it's one-handed on a phone.

My first week on Tinder looked promising; by the second I was only really watching whether the sorting can be trusted.

That is my read on Tinder anyway, others will have had different luck.

I disagree with Sophia Lane on this one. Tinder behaved very differently for me.

The good behaviour lasted right until the trial ended, and then whether enforcement is consistent or random changed.

I tested the service across two cities and the difference came down to what happens to your data after you delete.

If you bounced off this before, revisit the site and check where the paywall really kicks in first this time.

Where Tinder stands or falls is how the mobile build compares to the desktop one.

Your mileage on Tinder will vary by city more than by anything else.

Worth comparing against how Luvdate handles it before you commit to anything.

Given how whether the search actually respects what you set behaves, I would only recommend the platform to someone with patience.

The gap between good and bad platforms here is whether the sorting can be trusted.

Filling the profile out properly changed the service more than switching platforms did, and it reframed how the chat behaves on a weak connection.

Would be interested to hear if Tinder worked out differently for you.

Seconding what Ryan Scott said, with one caveat about Tinder.

After a few weeks on the service the only question left was whether the moderation is real or decorative.

Reply rate on the service roughly doubled once I stopped leading with a compliment, though how much control you get over who sees you never budged.

Anything I recommend around Tinder has to clear one bar, which is whether you can hide your location convincingly.

Whatever you land on, test Tinder for a week before you judge it.

If this one does not work out, DatingFly (datingfly.online) covers similar ground.
