Spent about two months comparing options around Plenty of Fish before settling on anything.

What separates Plenty of Fish from the rest of the field is whether 'free' means free to browse or free to talk.

The thing that finally moved the needle on the app was being specific about whether 'free' means free to browse or free to talk.

Provided what the real cost is after the trial holds up, it is a reasonable place to start.

After a few weeks on Plenty of Fish the only question left was how precise the filters really are.

Most comparisons of the service skip what the subscription actually unlocks, which is the part that matters.

Would anyone recommend Plenty of Fish to someone starting from scratch?

Anything I recommend around Plenty of Fish has to clear one bar, which is how aggressively it pushes credits at you.

I gave Plenty of Fish about 4 weeks before I formed a view, mostly watching what the free ceiling looks like in practice.

If you can only manage a few evenings a week, how far the free tier actually stretches matters more than raw volume on the site.

Before committing time to Plenty of Fish, work out whether messaging costs anything once you start.

Take that as one data point on Plenty of Fish rather than a verdict.

Took me about 6 weeks on Plenty of Fish to work out that the real question was how far the free tier actually stretches.

Unless you are in a major metro, expect what the real cost is after the trial to be the limiting factor on the service.

The thing nobody mentions about Plenty of Fish is how quickly it starts asking for money.

Worth comparing against DatingFly before you commit to anything.

Danielle Price covered most of it. The bit I would add on Plenty of Fish is below.

If you care about what the free ceiling looks like in practice, that alone should decide whether the app is worth it.

I had a better run on Datewander, for whatever that is worth.

I would judge Plenty of Fish on where the paywall really kicks in rather than on the feature list.

Turning off read receipts made it far less stressful, though it did nothing for how far the free tier actually stretches.

Whatever you land on, test Plenty of Fish for a week before you judge it.

Can confirm the the site part. Less sure about what protection exists before you meet.

Once I fixed my filters, whether the search actually respects what you set stopped being the bottleneck on the platform.

The reason I stopped recommending some of these is how much of it is usable without a card.

Two of us compared notes on the app and landed in the same place on what the free ceiling looks like in practice.

Your mileage on Plenty of Fish will vary by city more than by anything else.

That matches what I saw on the site, particularly how visible the block and report controls are.

Where Plenty of Fish stands or falls is how the match quality holds up past the first day.

Out of roughly 40 matches on Plenty of Fish, 4 turned into an actual conversation.

Where it works it works fast; where it doesn't, what the real cost is after the trial is usually the reason.

Datescout - worth a look came up when I asked the same question last year.

Broadly agree, though I would weight what protection exists before you meet higher.

I tested the site across two cities and the difference came down to how aggressively it pushes credits at you.

If you're only browsing, the platform is fine. The moment what the real cost is after the trial matters, it changes.

The measure I would actually check on Plenty of Fish is what the real cost is after the trial.

Is Plenty of Fish still like this, or has it improved?

I had a better run on the Luvdate community threads, for whatever that is worth.

One correction: on it, how granular the visibility controls get isn't what people assume.

If you bounced off this before, revisit the app and check how far the free tier actually stretches first this time.

If you only test one thing on that one, make it how much of it is usable without a card.

Does anyone know whether Plenty of Fish changed this recently?

Ended up splitting my time between this and Datebie.

The gap between good and bad platforms here is whether you can hold a conversation without paying.

Filling the profile out properly changed the site more than switching platforms did, and it reframed how far the free tier actually stretches.

What decided it for me with Plenty of Fish was how easy it is to spot a recycled photo.
