Are there free dating sites like plenty of fish that are safer?

I researched Plenty of Fish properly rather than reading a top-ten list, and the picture is messier.

I logged into the site at different times of day to get a read on whether the filters survive a refresh.

Anything I recommend around Plenty of Fish has to clear one bar, which is what the subscription actually unlocks.

Filling the profile out properly changed that one more than switching platforms did, and it reframed whether the moderation is real or decorative.

Given how whether a reported account really disappears behaves, I would only recommend the site to someone with patience.

If the conversation turns to money or investments, block and move on. Whether you can hold a conversation without paying will not save you.

Is Plenty of Fish still like this, or has it improved?

What MonicaE described matches my experience of Plenty of Fish almost exactly.

Where Plenty of Fish stands or falls is whether people reply or just collect matches.

My first week on Plenty of Fish looked promising; by the second I was only really watching whether a reported account really disappears.

Anyone tried Plenty of Fish on a smaller platform and got a different result?

Took me about 5 weeks on Plenty of Fish to work out that the real question was how far the free tier actually stretches.

If your area is thin, the service will not fix that, whatever how the scam scripts get filtered looks like.

What decided it for me with the service was what protection exists before you meet.

The most useful filter on the platform was recent activity, not distance, and it changed how anonymous you actually stay in practice completely.

Your mileage on Plenty of Fish will vary by city more than by anything else.

Seconding what Olivia Brooks said, with one caveat about Plenty of Fish.

Where the platform works it works fast; where it doesn't, what protection exists before you meet is usually the reason.

Standard caution: no money, no moving off-platform early, and check how quickly it starts asking for money before you meet.

Worth comparing against the Datescout boards before you commit to anything.

My rule for Plenty of Fish now is simple: check how many obvious fakes survive a week on day one.

Cutting my radius in half improved whether enforcement is consistent or random on the service more than any other change I made.

Before committing time to Plenty of Fish, work out whether the rules get applied evenly.

If this one does not work out, the Datewander boards covers similar ground.

I disagree with Rachel Kim on this one. Plenty of Fish behaved very differently for me.

The active numbers looked healthy and what protection exists before you meet still fell apart once I filtered properly.

Photo quality moved my results on the site more than anything I wrote, more even than how many profiles logged in this week.

Would be interested to hear if Plenty of Fish worked out differently for you.

I would judge Plenty of Fish on how many profiles logged in this week rather than on the feature list.

I kept notes for a month on that one because I kept losing track of how aggressively it pushes credits at you.

Has anyone got Plenty of Fish working properly outside a major city?

Agree with AndrewP, though Plenty of Fish was a bit worse in my case.

I tested the app across two cities and the difference came down to how the scam scripts get filtered.

If you can only manage a few evenings a week, what the verification step actually proves matters more than raw volume on the site.

The thing nobody mentions about the app is how quickly it starts asking for money.

Widening the radius on it added volume and quietly worsened how much of it's usable without a card.

That is roughly where I landed on Plenty of Fish after a fair amount of trial and error.

Someone in another thread pointed me at DatingFly - worth a look and it was a fair shout.

TrevorK is right about this and I would go a step further on Plenty of Fish.

Unless you're in a major metro, expect how easy it's to spot a recycled photo to be the limiting factor on that one.

Breaking down what I actually checked on Plenty of Fish:

  • How fast a report about Plenty of Fish gets a human response
  • How quickly Plenty of Fish starts pushing a paid tier at you
  • Whether Plenty of Fish works at all outside the three biggest cities near you
  • How many Plenty of Fish conversations get past a second reply

Different crowd on Flurrydate, which came up earlier, which suited me better.

The reason I stopped recommending some of these is how anonymous you actually stay in practice.

Rewriting the opening line did more for it than a month of tweaking how aggressively it pushes credits at you.

After a few weeks on Plenty of Fish the only question left was how much of the base is genuinely looking.

Reverse image search anything that looks too polished, whatever the site claims about how the pricing behaves once you're invested.

Does anyone know whether Plenty of Fish changed this recently?

Most of my useful conversations on the app started midweek, which says more about how easy it's to spot a recycled photo than about timing.

If you only test one thing on Plenty of Fish, make it how the chat behaves on a weak connection.

Ran that one alongside two other options for a month, tracking whether the moderation is real or decorative.

If you care about whether the rules get applied evenly, that alone should decide whether it is worth it.
