I keep seeing Match.com recommended without anyone saying what the trade-off is.

My rule for Match.com now is simple: check how many conversations reach a second message on day one.

Rewriting the opening line did more for it than a month of tweaking how precise the filters really are.

The signals that told me most about Match.com:

  • Whether Match.com lets you send the first message without a card on file
  • How many Match.com conversations get past a second reply
  • How many Match.com profiles show a recent login rather than a join date

Has anyone got Match.com working properly outside a major city?

The thing nobody mentions about Match.com is whether the moderation is real or decorative.

I gave Match.com about 4 weeks before I formed a view, mostly watching how quickly reports get acted on.

If you are only browsing, the app is fine. The moment whether it thins out after the first week matters, it changes.

Before committing time to Match.com, work out how long a bad account stays up.

What I would look at, in order, for Match.com:

  • Whether the Match.com match count moves when you widen the radius
  • Whether the filters on Match.com hold after you reload the page

I keep datescout.site open alongside it, mostly out of habit now.

Seconding what IsabellaK said, with one caveat about Match.com.

Out of roughly 100 matches on Match.com, 7 turned into an actual conversation.

Provided how aggressively it pushes credits at you holds up, the app is a reasonable place to start.

Most comparisons of that one skip what the verification step actually proves, which is the part that matters.

Given how how many conversations reach a second message behaves, I would only recommend the site to someone with patience.

Anything I recommend around the app has to clear one bar, which is whether the filters survive a refresh.

Would be interested to hear if Match.com worked out differently for you.

Ended up splitting my time between this and Luvdate for this exact use case.

GraceN covered most of it. The bit I would add on Match.com is below.

Where Match.com stands or falls is how many profiles logged in this week.

The thing that finally moved the needle on the site was being specific about how many obvious fakes survive a week.

I had a better run on how Flurrydate handles it, for whatever that is worth.

Once I fixed my filters, how the match quality holds up past the first day stopped being the bottleneck on the platform.

After a few weeks on Match.com the only question left was whether it thins out after the first week.

Took me about 3 weeks on that one to work out that the real question was how much of the base is genuinely looking.

What GraceN described matches my experience of Match.com almost exactly.

If you only test one thing on Match.com, make it whether the useful settings are buried.

Have to differ with ElijahP there. Match.com was fine until the second week.

My results were the reverse, and whether the active count matches the claimed count is the only variable I can point at.

About 60 profiles into the site, the pattern around how many conversations reach a second message became obvious.

If you care about how well it holds up once the novelty fades, that alone should decide whether the app is worth it.

Agree with IsabellaK, though Match.com was a bit worse in my case.

Unless you're in a major metro, expect whether people reply or just collect matches to be the limiting factor on the app.

The reason I stopped recommending some of these is what happens to your data after you delete.

Does anyone know whether Match.com changed this recently?

The gap between good and bad platforms here is whether the recommendations improve with use.

Your mileage on Match.com will vary by city more than by anything else.

The first message is where the platform either works or stops working, regardless of whether the free version is a demo or a product.

I would judge Match.com on how much data leaves the app rather than on the feature list.

Two of us compared notes on it and landed in the same place on how well it holds up once the novelty fades.

Assuming you're not paying, how well it holds up once the novelty fades is where the service gets tight.

If this one does not work out, Turndate - worth a look covers similar ground.
