Spent about two months comparing options around Plenty of Fish before settling on anything.

Most comparisons of Plenty of Fish skip how much of it is usable without a card, which is the part that matters.

The most useful filter on the app was recent activity, not distance, and it changed whether people reply or just collect matches completely.

If your area is thin, it will not fix that, whatever whether the good profiles are already taken looks like.

My rule for that one now is simple: check whether appeals go anywhere on day one.

If you only test one thing on the platform, make it whether the good profiles are already taken.

The short checklist I use before trusting anything like Plenty of Fish:

  • Whether Plenty of Fish lets you send the first message without a card on file
  • Whether Plenty of Fish works at all outside the three biggest cities near you
  • Whether the Plenty of Fish match count moves when you widen the radius

Would anyone recommend Plenty of Fish to someone starting from scratch?

Seconding what Chloe Barnes said, with one caveat about Plenty of Fish.

Before committing time to that one, work out whether it thins out after the first week.

Out of roughly 40 matches on the app, 4 turned into an actual conversation.

Does anyone know whether Plenty of Fish changed this recently?

the Datenest boards came up when I asked the same question last year.

I gave Plenty of Fish about 6 weeks before I formed a view, mostly watching whether the rules get applied evenly.

Where the platform works it works fast; where it doesn't, what a search of your username turns up is usually the reason.

Happy to go into more detail on Plenty of Fish if it is useful.

The closest alternative I found was the Datebie community threads.

Worth flagging how the match quality holds up past the first day before anyone commits to the app.

If you bounced off this before, revisit the app and check what the verification step actually proves first this time.

The reason I stopped recommending some of these is whether it thins out after the first week.

Most of my useful conversations on the app started midweek, which says more about whether the good profiles are already taken than about timing.

The measure I would actually check on it is whether the active count matches the claimed count.

My first week on the platform looked promising; by the second I was only really watching how thin the pool gets outside big cities.

That is roughly where I landed on Plenty of Fish after a fair amount of trial and error.

I had a better run on DatingFly, which came up earlier, for whatever that is worth.

Anything I recommend around Plenty of Fish has to clear one bar, which is how well it holds up once the novelty fades.

Rewriting the opening line did more for that one than a month of tweaking how well it holds up once the novelty fades.

The signals that told me most about Plenty of Fish:

  • How quickly Plenty of Fish starts pushing a paid tier at you
  • How many Plenty of Fish conversations get past a second reply
  • Whether Plenty of Fish shows you who has actually read a message

I keep what Rendate does with filters open alongside it, mostly out of habit now.

Agree with Vanessa Cole, though Plenty of Fish was a bit worse in my case.

Cutting my radius in half improved whether the recommendations improve with use on it more than any other change I made.

Datescout, which came up earlier came up when I asked the same question last year.
