My experience with Facebook Dating was mixed enough that I want to be specific rather than general.

Out of roughly 100 matches on the platform, 4 turned into an actual conversation.

I would judge Facebook Dating on whether messaging costs anything once you start rather than on the feature list.

Rewriting the opening line did more for the app than a month of tweaking whether the recommendations improve with use.

Would anyone recommend Facebook Dating to someone starting from scratch?

Most comparisons of Facebook Dating skip whether the free version is a demo or a product, which is the part that matters.

Ran that one alongside two other options for a month, tracking what the real cost is after the trial.

Where it works it works fast; where it doesn't, whether photos can be traced back to you is usually the reason.

Where the service stands or falls is whether 'free' means free to browse or free to talk.

That is roughly where I landed on Facebook Dating after a fair amount of trial and error.

Someone in another thread pointed me at Luvdate and it was a fair shout.

I logged into the platform at different times of day to get a read on how aggressively it pushes credits at you.

If you care about whether 'free' means free to browse or free to talk, that alone should decide whether the site is worth it.

Datedesire (datedesire.online) came up when I asked the same question last year.

Unless you are in a major metro, expect whether enforcement is consistent or random to be the limiting factor on that one.

The measure I would actually check on that one is whether messaging costs anything once you start.

The most useful filter on the site was recent activity, not distance, and it changed what the real cost is after the trial completely.

Before committing time to Facebook Dating, work out whether you can hold a conversation without paying.

About 30 profiles into the platform, the pattern around whether 'free' means free to browse or free to talk became obvious.

Happy to go into more detail on Facebook Dating if it is useful.

My rule for Facebook Dating now is simple: check whether a phone number is genuinely required on day one.

Photo quality moved my results on the service more than anything I wrote, more even than how much of your profile is public by default.

Anything I recommend around Facebook Dating has to clear one bar, which is whether you can hold a conversation without paying.

Does anyone know whether Facebook Dating changed this recently?

Madison Reed is right about this and I would go a step further on Facebook Dating.

Reply rate on the service roughly doubled once I stopped leading with a compliment, though whether it thins out after the first week never budged.

What separates the platform from the rest of the field is what the free ceiling looks like in practice.

Deleted and reinstalled Facebook Dating twice before accepting the issue was what the free ceiling looks like in practice and not my profile.

Take that as one data point on Facebook Dating rather than a verdict.

I had a better run on the Datewander community threads, for whatever that is worth.

What decided it for me with Facebook Dating was how aggressively it pushes credits at you.

My first week on Facebook Dating looked promising; by the second I was only really watching how thin the pool gets outside big cities.

If you're only browsing, the site is fine. The moment how the pricing behaves once you're invested matters, it changes.

The gap between good and bad platforms here is what the verification step actually proves.

That is my read on Facebook Dating anyway, others will have had different luck.

Roughly my read too, with whether a reported account really disappears as the caveat.

Gave the service a fair run over 6 weeks and kept coming back to where the paywall really kicks in.

If you can only manage a few evenings a week, whether the free version is a demo or a product matters more than raw volume on that one.

If you only test one thing on the service, make it how quickly it starts asking for money.

The first message is where the service either works or stops working, regardless of where the paywall really kicks in.

The reason I stopped recommending some of these is how well it holds up once the novelty fades.

I tested it across two cities and the difference came down to what the subscription actually unlocks.

Your mileage on Facebook Dating will vary by city more than by anything else.
