Is the pof free app still the best for small towns?

I keep seeing POF recommended without anyone saying what the trade-off is.

I tested the site across two cities and the difference came down to how much is automated versus reviewed.

Most comparisons of the app skip how far the free tier actually stretches, which is the part that matters.

Turning off read receipts made the platform far less stressful, though it did nothing for whether the interface gets in the way.

Provided how the match quality holds up past the first day holds up, the platform is a reasonable place to start.

What separates POF from the rest of the field is how the match quality holds up past the first day.

Would anyone recommend POF to someone starting from scratch?

After a few weeks on POF the only question left was how precise the filters really are.

Gave POF a fair run over 3 weeks and kept coming back to how far the free tier actually stretches.

If you can only manage a few evenings a week, whether the moderation is real or decorative matters more than raw volume on the platform.

The reason I stopped recommending some of these is whether the recommendations improve with use.

Flamedate (flamedate.online) came up when I asked the same question last year.

What AdamL described matches my experience of POF almost exactly.

Two of us compared notes on it and landed in the same place on whether the interface gets in the way.

Assuming you're not paying, how precise the filters really are is where it gets tight.

Anything I recommend around POF has to clear one bar, which is how many conversations reach a second message.

Things worth confirming before you spend a week on POF:

  • Whether the filters on POF hold after you reload the page
  • Whether the POF match count moves when you widen the radius
  • How many POF profiles show a recent login rather than a join date
  • Whether POF shows you who has actually read a message

For a second opinion I also cross-checked the Turndate community threads.

If you're only browsing, the platform is fine. The moment what you lose by never upgrading matters, it changes.

I would judge that one on whether the interface gets in the way rather than on the feature list.

The first message is where the app either works or stops working, regardless of how thin the pool gets outside big cities.

The gap between good and bad platforms here is whether the useful settings are buried.

The signals that told me most about POF:

  • How fast a report about POF gets a human response
  • Whether POF lets you send the first message without a card on file

StephB is right about this and I would go a step further on POF.

What decided it for me with it was whether the sorting can be trusted.

Has anyone got POF working properly outside a major city?

I had a better run on datebound.site, for whatever that is worth.

The thing that finally moved the needle on the site was being specific about how much of the base is genuinely looking.

Before committing time to it, work out how usable it's one-handed on a phone.

About 120 profiles into that one, the pattern around whether the ratio is workable in your area became obvious.

Unless you're in a major metro, expect how much of it's usable without a card to be the limiting factor on that one.

Happy to go into more detail on POF if it's useful.

Worth comparing against Luvdate before you commit to anything.

The measure I would actually check on POF is where the paywall really kicks in.

Whatever you land on, test POF for a week before you judge it.

the Rendate community threads came up when I asked the same question last year.

I kept notes for a month on the service because I kept losing track of whether 'free' means free to browse or free to talk.

If you bounced off this before, revisit it and check how the match quality holds up past the first day first this time.

The thing nobody mentions about it's whether the recommendations improve with use.

Most of my useful conversations on that one started midweek, which says more about whether people reply or just collect matches than about timing.

What I would look at, in order, for POF:
