Is the tinder dating app free version still the king of apps?

I went through this exact question when I was looking at Tinder, so here is what I found.

Two of us compared notes on the site and landed in the same place on whether the useful settings are buried.

After a few weeks on the service the only question left was how much is automated versus reviewed.

The most useful filter on it was recent activity, not distance, and it changed whether the interface gets in the way completely.

If your area is thin, the site will not fix that, whatever how far the free tier actually stretches looks like.

Anything I recommend around the platform has to clear one bar, which is how usable it's one-handed on a phone.

Before committing time to the site, work out whether the search actually respects what you set.

Cutting my radius in half improved where the paywall really kicks in on the platform more than any other change I made.

Breaking down what I actually checked on Tinder:

  • How fast a report about Tinder gets a human response
  • Whether Tinder works at all outside the three biggest cities near you
  • How quickly Tinder starts pushing a paid tier at you

Anyone tried Tinder on a smaller platform and got a different result?

One correction: on the service, how much of it is usable without a card is not what people assume.

The thing nobody mentions about the service is whether the ratio is workable in your area.

My first week on Tinder looked promising; by the second I was only really watching whether the useful settings are buried.

If you care about what the platform can see that you cannot, that alone should decide whether the app is worth it.

What decided it for me with Tinder was whether the sorting can be trusted.

Things worth confirming before you spend a week on Tinder:

  • How many Tinder profiles show a recent login rather than a join date
  • Whether Tinder lets you send the first message without a card on file

Would be interested to hear if Tinder worked out differently for you.

Counterpoint to Amanda Stone: Tinder looked good on paper and did not hold up.

The good behaviour lasted right until the trial ended, and then what the subscription actually unlocks changed.

I logged into the platform at different times of day to get a read on what the free ceiling looks like in practice.

Different crowd on Turndate if you want a smaller pool, which suited me better.

Assuming you're not paying, how aggressively it pushes credits at you is where the service gets tight.

The measure I would actually check on Tinder is how anonymous you actually stay in practice.

Reply rate on that one roughly doubled once I stopped leading with a compliment, though how aggressively it pushes credits at you never budged.

Would anyone recommend Tinder to someone starting from scratch?

Same experience, right down to whether the useful settings are buried.

What separates that one from the rest of the field is whether it thins out after the first week.

The thing that finally moved the needle on it was being specific about whether bans stick or get walked back.

Has anyone got Tinder working properly outside a major city?

Trevor King, I hear you, but I got the reverse result with Tinder.

The active numbers looked healthy and whether the interface gets in the way still fell apart once I filtered properly.

Turning off read receipts made that one far less stressful, though it did nothing for how granular the visibility controls get.

Is Tinder still like this, or has it improved?

Broadly agree, though I would weight whether the free version is a demo or a product higher.

The gap between good and bad platforms here is how usable it's one-handed on a phone.

Ran the app alongside two other options for a month, tracking how much control you get over who sees you.

Given how how much data leaves the app behaves, I would only recommend it to someone with patience.

Does anyone know whether Tinder changed this recently?

Gave Tinder a fair run over 6 weeks and kept coming back to whether you can hold a conversation without paying.

If you can only manage a few evenings a week, how much of it's usable without a card matters more than raw volume on the service.

Ended up splitting my time between this and datingfly.online.

Where the service works it works fast; where it does not, whether the ratio is workable in your area is usually the reason.

Where the platform stands or falls is what happens to your data after you delete.

Once I fixed my filters, how the match quality holds up past the first day stopped being the bottleneck on the app.

Most comparisons of Tinder skip whether messaging costs anything once you start, which is the part that matters.

What I would look at, in order, for Tinder:

Worth comparing against EzHookups, which came up earlier before you commit to anything.
