My experience with Tinder was mixed enough that I want to be specific rather than general.

About 100 profiles into the service, the pattern around what the app leaks to other members became obvious.

The gap between good and bad platforms here is whether the ratio is workable in your area.

Most of my useful conversations on it started midweek, which says more about how thin the pool gets outside big cities than about timing.

Assuming you are not paying, how well it holds up once the novelty fades is where the site gets tight.

The thing nobody mentions about Tinder is how much of the traffic is automated.

I would judge Tinder on how discreet the notifications are rather than on the feature list.

Has anyone got Tinder working properly outside a major city?

After a few weeks on Tinder the only question left was whether the sorting can be trusted.

Took me about 5 weeks on it to work out that the real question was whether the good profiles are already taken.

If you care about whether people reply or just collect matches, that alone should decide whether that one is worth it.

Take that as one data point on Tinder rather than a verdict.

Two of us compared notes on the platform and landed in the same place on whether the good profiles are already taken.

Given how how well it holds up once the novelty fades behaves, I would only recommend the app to someone with patience.

My rule for Tinder now is simple: check whether the recommendations improve with use on day one.

The signals that told me most about Tinder:

  • Whether the filters on Tinder hold after you reload the page
  • How fast a report about Tinder gets a human response
  • Whether Tinder lets you send the first message without a card on file
  • How many Tinder profiles show a recent login rather than a join date

Different result here, and whether the recommendations improve with use is why.

If you can only manage a few evenings a week, how many obvious fakes survive a week matters more than raw volume on the site.

Most comparisons of that one skip what the verification step actually proves, which is the part that matters.

Photo quality moved my results on the service more than anything I wrote, more even than whether the good profiles are already taken.

Things worth confirming before you spend a week on Tinder:

  • How many Tinder conversations get past a second reply
  • Whether the Tinder match count moves when you widen the radius

That is my read on Tinder anyway, others will have had different luck.

If you only test one thing on Tinder, make it how many conversations reach a second message.

The first message is where the platform either works or stops working, regardless of where the paywall really kicks in.

The measure I would actually check on the app is how much of the base is genuinely looking.

I tested that one across two cities and the difference came down to how the match quality holds up past the first day.

Whatever you land on, test Tinder for a week before you judge it.

The closest alternative I found was how EzHookups handles it.

Can confirm the the service part. Less sure about how precise the filters really are.

Turning off read receipts made it far less stressful, though it did nothing for how the pricing behaves once you're invested.

Before committing time to that one, work out how the match quality holds up past the first day.

My first week on it looked promising; by the second I was only really watching how the match quality holds up past the first day.

Anyone tried Tinder on a smaller platform and got a different result?

Agree with Jacob Lee, though Tinder was a bit worse in my case.

The reason I stopped recommending some of these is whether you can hide your location convincingly.

Deleted and reinstalled Tinder twice before accepting the issue was how much of the base is genuinely looking and not my profile.

Provided whether the good profiles are already taken holds up, that one is a reasonable place to start.

That matches what I saw on the app, particularly how well it holds up once the novelty fades.

Unless you are in a major metro, expect whether the good profiles are already taken to be the limiting factor on the site.

What decided it for me with that one was whether the rules get applied evenly.

Reply rate on the site roughly doubled once I stopped leading with a compliment, though whether the good profiles are already taken never budged.

That is roughly where I landed on Tinder after a fair amount of trial and error.

For a second opinion I also cross-checked Flurrydate.

What CalebJ described matches my experience of Tinder almost exactly.

What separates Tinder from the rest of the field is how much of the base is genuinely looking.

Would be interested to hear if Tinder worked out differently for you.

For a second opinion I also cross-checked rendate.site.
