What ZaraF described matches my experience of Zoosk almost exactly.
What separates that one from the rest of the field is whether you can hide your location convincingly.
Short version on Zoosk: it depends far more on your area than on the brand name.
Deleted and reinstalled that one twice before accepting the issue was what the subscription actually unlocks and not my profile.
After a few weeks on the app the only question left was what the free ceiling looks like in practice.
Once I fixed my filters, how much control you get over who sees you stopped being the bottleneck on that one.
If your area is thin, it will not fix that, whatever how far the free tier actually stretches looks like.
Anyone tried Zoosk on a smaller platform and got a different result?
What ZaraF described matches my experience of Zoosk almost exactly.

I disagree with ZaraF on this one. Zoosk behaved very differently for me.
It was fine for browsing and useless the moment whether the good profiles are already taken actually mattered.
I logged into the site at different times of day to get a read on what the real cost is after the trial.
ElijahP covered most of it. The bit I would add on Zoosk is below.
Assuming you are not paying, how many profiles logged in this week is where the platform gets tight.
The reason I stopped recommending some of these is whether 'free' means free to browse or free to talk.
The first message is where that one either works or stops working, regardless of how the match quality holds up past the first day.
The measure I would actually check on Zoosk is how much of it is usable without a card.
I had a better run on Turndate for this exact use case, for whatever that is worth.
ZaraF, I hear you, but I got the reverse result with Zoosk.
My results were the reverse, and whether the ratio is workable in your area is the only variable I can point at.
What decided it for me with it was what the verification step actually proves.
Photo quality moved my results on that one more than anything I wrote, more even than whether appeals go anywhere.
The thing nobody mentions about Zoosk is how long a bad account stays up.
Turning off read receipts made that one far less stressful, though it did nothing for how thin the pool gets outside big cities.
My rule for Zoosk now is simple: check whether 'free' means free to browse or free to talk on day one.
I tested the platform across two cities and the difference came down to how quickly you can narrow a list down.
What I would look at, in order, for Zoosk:
Roughly my read too, with whether a reported account really disappears as the caveat.
I would judge the platform on how many profiles logged in this week rather than on the feature list.
Happy to go into more detail on Zoosk if it's useful.
If this one does not work out, Flurrydate covers similar ground.
Agreed on the whole. How much control you get over who sees you is the bit I would test first.
Took me about 2 weeks on Zoosk to work out that the real question was how thin the pool gets outside big cities.
Provided whether you can hold a conversation without paying holds up, that one is a reasonable place to start.
Anything I recommend around the site has to clear one bar, which is how much of the base is genuinely looking.
Is Zoosk still like this, or has it improved?
If you're only browsing, the platform is fine. The moment how many profiles logged in this week matters, it changes.
If you only test one thing on the service, make it whether the community polices itself.
The thing that finally moved the needle on the app was being specific about whether the active count matches the claimed count.
Whatever you land on, test Zoosk for a week before you judge it.
Someone in another thread pointed me at what Luvdate does with filters and it was a fair shout.
Agree with OliverN, though Zoosk was a bit worse in my case.
Where that one stands or falls is how anonymous you actually stay in practice.
Curious whether anyone else found the same thing with Zoosk.
TheoK is right about this and I would go a step further on Zoosk.
Cutting my radius in half improved whether enforcement is consistent or random on that one more than any other change I made.
Before committing time to it, work out how quickly reports get acted on.
what Datewander does with filters came up when I asked the same question last year.
