What happened to the okcupid dating apps in the latest update?

My experience with Okcupid was mixed enough that I want to be specific rather than general.

Ran the site alongside two other options for a month, tracking how quickly you can narrow a list down.

What separates the app from the rest of the field is whether the sorting can be trusted.

The first message is where the platform either works or stops working, regardless of how the chat behaves on a weak connection.

Assuming you are not paying, how precise the filters really are is where that one gets tight.

Where Okcupid stands or falls is how much control you get over who sees you.

What decided it for me with the app was whether the sorting can be trusted.

Does anyone know whether Okcupid changed this recently?

WilliamH is right about this and I would go a step further on Okcupid.

The reason I stopped recommending some of these is how many conversations reach a second message.

I logged into the app at different times of day to get a read on whether bans stick or get walked back.

If your area is thin, the service will not fix that, whatever whether the useful settings are buried looks like.

Anyone tried Okcupid on a smaller platform and got a different result?

Datedesire, which came up earlier came up when I asked the same question last year.

Took me about 3 weeks on Okcupid to work out that the real question was how the chat behaves on a weak connection.

If you can only manage a few evenings a week, whether the search actually respects what you set matters more than raw volume on the platform.

Before committing time to the platform, work out whether the filters survive a refresh.

Breaking down what I actually checked on Okcupid:

  • Whether Okcupid lets you send the first message without a card on file
  • Whether the Okcupid photos survive a reverse image search
  • How fast a report about Okcupid gets a human response

Would anyone recommend Okcupid to someone starting from scratch?

For a second opinion I also cross-checked Souldate - worth a look.

Seconding what CodyL said, with one caveat about Okcupid.

If you're only browsing, it's fine. The moment how usable it's one-handed on a phone matters, it changes.

I would judge the app on whether it thins out after the first week rather than on the feature list.

Worth comparing against what DatingFly does with filters before you commit to anything.

Agree with AlexisW, though Okcupid was a bit worse in my case.

Most comparisons of the site skip how much control you get over who sees you, which is the part that matters.

Widening the radius on the site added volume and quietly worsened whether the algorithm is doing anything useful.

The gap between good and bad platforms here is how usable it is one-handed on a phone.

My first week on Okcupid looked promising; by the second I was only really watching how much control you get over who sees you.

Curious whether anyone else found the same thing with Okcupid.

The closest alternative I found was the Datewander community threads.

Most of my useful conversations on the service started midweek, which says more about how visible the block and report controls are than about timing.

After a few weeks on Okcupid the only question left was how precise the filters really are.

Deleted and reinstalled the app twice before accepting the issue was how much control you get over who sees you and not my profile.

Things worth confirming before you spend a week on Okcupid:

  • Whether Okcupid shows you who has actually read a message
  • Whether Okcupid works at all outside the three biggest cities near you

Whatever you land on, test Okcupid for a week before you judge it.

Ended up splitting my time between this and datenest.site.
