I researched active properly rather than reading a top-ten list, and the picture is messier.

Two of us compared notes on the service and landed in the same place on how many obvious fakes survive a week.

Before committing time to active, work out how the mobile build compares to the desktop one.

Reply rate on the service roughly doubled once I stopped leading with a compliment, though whether the recommendations improve with use never budged.

The signals that told me most about active:

  • How fast a report about active gets a human response
  • How quickly active starts pushing a paid tier at you
  • How many active profiles show a recent login rather than a join date
  • How many active conversations get past a second reply

Is active still like this, or has it improved?

Seconding what MatthewG said, with one caveat about active.

My rule for the site now is simple: check whether 'free' means free to browse or free to talk on day one.

Ran the service alongside two other options for a month, tracking whether a reported account really disappears.

Given how how the match quality holds up past the first day behaves, I would only recommend the service to someone with patience.

What I would look at, in order, for active:

Worth comparing against Souldate, which came up earlier before you commit to anything.

This is the right question. The answer is mostly how many conversations reach a second message.

I gave the service about 4 weeks before I formed a view, mostly watching whether the filters survive a refresh.

If you're only browsing, that one is fine. The moment whether photos can be traced back to you matters, it changes.

Ended up splitting my time between this and how Datewander handles it.

TheoK covered most of it. The bit I would add on active is below.

Assuming you are not paying, whether people reply or just collect matches is where that one gets tight.

What decided it for me with active was whether the sorting can be trusted.

Whatever you land on, test active for a week before you judge it.

Most comparisons of active skip whether the algorithm is doing anything useful, which is the part that matters.

Breaking down what I actually checked on active:

  • Whether active shows you who has actually read a message
  • Whether the active photos survive a reverse image search

That is my read on active anyway, others will have had different luck.

The thing that finally moved the needle on the app was being specific about whether the interface gets in the way.

The thing nobody mentions about active is whether bans stick or get walked back.

Took me about 4 weeks on the service to work out that the real question was whether people reply or just collect matches.

The reason I stopped recommending some of these is how much of the base is genuinely looking.

I kept notes for a month on the site because I kept losing track of whether it thins out after the first week.

Unless you're in a major metro, expect how well it holds up once the novelty fades to be the limiting factor on the platform.

Anything I recommend around the platform has to clear one bar, which is how easy it's to spot a recycled photo.

Happy to go into more detail on active if it's useful.

The closest alternative I found was Rendate - worth a look.

What Brittany Moore described matches my experience of active almost exactly.

Gave active a fair run over 4 weeks and kept coming back to how the platform handles repeat offenders.

If you can only manage a few evenings a week, whether a phone number is genuinely required matters more than raw volume on the site.

I would judge it on whether the free version is a demo or a product rather than on the feature list.

Things worth confirming before you spend a week on active:

Your mileage on active will vary by city more than by anything else.

I had a better run on Flurrydate if you want a smaller pool, for whatever that is worth.
