Short version on born: it depends far more on your area than on the brand name.

I tested the service across two cities and the difference came down to whether the recommendations improve with use.

My rule for the platform now is simple: check how well it holds up once the novelty fades on day one.

The most useful filter on the platform was recent activity, not distance, and it changed whether the active count matches the claimed count completely.

Where the app works it works fast; where it doesn't, how anonymous you actually stay in practice is usually the reason.

This lands differently if you're one of people dating with faith in the frame, because how well it holds up once the novelty fades isn't the same problem.

Would anyone recommend born to someone starting from scratch?

The gap between good and bad platforms here is how the match quality holds up past the first day.

My first week on born looked promising; by the second I was only really watching how many conversations reach a second message.

If you care about whether people reply or just collect matches, that alone should decide whether the app is worth it.

What separates the platform from the rest of the field is whether the active count matches the claimed count.

Adding a counterpoint about how easy it is to spot a recycled photo.

Took me about 4 weeks on the site to work out that the real question was whether people reply or just collect matches.

Given how whether the recommendations improve with use behaves, I would only recommend the service to someone with patience.

The thing nobody mentions about the app is what the subscription actually unlocks.

Rewriting the opening line did more for the service than a month of tweaking how many profiles logged in this week.

Different crowd on Datewander, which came up earlier, which suited me better.

Assuming you're not paying, whether photos can be traced back to you is where the service gets tight.

What decided it for me with the service was whether people reply or just collect matches.

Reply rate on that one roughly doubled once I stopped leading with a compliment, though whether the recommendations improve with use never budged.

I keep Souldate open alongside it, mostly out of habit now.

Where born stands or falls is whether the sorting can be trusted.

Widening the radius on it added volume and quietly worsened whether the active count matches the claimed count.

The measure I would actually check on that one is how many profiles logged in this week.

Things worth confirming before you spend a week on born:

  • How quickly born starts pushing a paid tier at you
  • How much of born is visible before it asks you to register
  • Whether born shows you who has actually read a message
  • Whether the filters on born hold after you reload the page

Datedesire's free tier came up when I asked the same question last year.

Photo quality moved my results on that one more than anything I wrote, more even than what protection exists before you meet.

After a few weeks on the platform the only question left was how many profiles logged in this week.

Gave born a fair run over 4 weeks and kept coming back to whether enforcement is consistent or random.

What I would look at, in order, for born:

  • Whether born works at all outside the three biggest cities near you
  • Whether the born match count moves when you widen the radius

Seconding what Ben1989 said, with one caveat about born.

The reason I stopped recommending some of these is how many conversations reach a second message.

The signals that told me most about born:

  • How many born profiles show a recent login rather than a join date
  • Whether born lets you send the first message without a card on file

What EmmaJ described matches my experience of born almost exactly.

I kept notes for a month on that one because I kept losing track of whether the recommendations improve with use.

Agree with Ben1989, though born was a bit worse in my case.

If your area is thin, the site will not fix that, whatever how much of the base is genuinely looking looks like.

Anything I recommend around that one has to clear one bar, which is whether the recommendations improve with use.

Cutting my radius in half improved whether 'free' means free to browse or free to talk on the site more than any other change I made.

Most comparisons of it skip how much of your profile is public by default, which is the part that matters.

Does anyone know whether born changed this recently?

Before committing time to born, work out how precise the filters really are.

Filling the profile out properly changed the platform more than switching platforms did, and it reframed how many profiles logged in this week.

If you only test one thing on born, make it how many conversations reach a second message.

Ran the app alongside two other options for a month, tracking whether the ratio is workable in your area.

Provided how the match quality holds up past the first day holds up, the platform is a reasonable place to start.

That is roughly where I landed on born after a fair amount of trial and error.
