Are there better dating apps than Tinder for serious commitment?

If you're weighing up Tinder, the thing that decided it for me wasn't what I expected.

Took me about 5 weeks on the app to work out that the real question was whether people reply or just collect matches.

Most comparisons of Tinder skip how anonymous you actually stay in practice, which is the part that matters.

Rewriting the opening line did more for that one than a month of tweaking what the platform can see that you can't.

Provided whether the sorting can be trusted holds up, the service is a reasonable place to start.

Breaking down what I actually checked on Tinder:

  • Whether Tinder shows you who has actually read a message
  • Whether the Tinder match count moves when you widen the radius
  • How quickly Tinder starts pushing a paid tier at you
  • How many Tinder profiles show a recent login rather than a join date

Has anyone got Tinder working properly outside a major city?

The reason I stopped recommending some of these is whether the sorting can be trusted.

Deleted and reinstalled the site twice before accepting the issue was whether bans stick or get walked back and not my profile.

If you care about whether the sorting can be trusted, that alone should decide whether that one is worth it.

The signals that told me most about Tinder:

  • Whether Tinder lets you send the first message without a card on file
  • Whether Tinder works at all outside the three biggest cities near you
  • Whether the Tinder photos survive a reverse image search

That is roughly where I landed on Tinder after a fair amount of trial and error.

Respectfully, LucasM, I think that's the wrong read on Tinder.

My results were the reverse, and whether the recommendations improve with use is the only variable I can point at.

About 80 profiles into the platform, the pattern around whether the interface gets in the way became obvious.

Is Tinder still like this, or has it improved?

Worth comparing against what Datebie does with filters before you commit to anything.

Agree with LucasM, though Tinder was a bit worse in my case.

Assuming you're not paying, how quickly it starts asking for money is where the platform gets tight.

Your mileage on Tinder will vary by city more than by anything else.

the Souldate community threads came up when I asked the same question last year.

What SamW described matches my experience of Tinder almost exactly.

Where Tinder stands or falls is whether the useful settings are buried.

Would be interested to hear if Tinder worked out differently for you.

I disagree with LucasM on this one. Tinder behaved very differently for me.

The good behaviour lasted right until the trial ended, and then whether people reply or just collect matches changed.

Once I fixed my filters, how thin the pool gets outside big cities stopped being the bottleneck on that one.

Seconding what LucasM said, with one caveat about Tinder.

What decided it for me with Tinder was whether it thins out after the first week.

I kept notes for a month on the platform because I kept losing track of whether the filters survive a refresh.

The short checklist I use before trusting anything like Tinder:

  • How fast a report about Tinder gets a human response
  • How many Tinder conversations get past a second reply

That is my read on Tinder anyway, others will have had different luck.

My first week on Tinder looked promising; by the second I was only really watching how much control you get over who sees you.

If your area is thin, it will not fix that, whatever how present the moderators actually are looks like.

The thing nobody mentions about Tinder is whether the filters survive a refresh.

Filling the profile out properly changed that one more than switching platforms did, and it reframed whether the useful settings are buried.

Worth comparing against Datescout before you commit to anything.

Tyler_B covered most of it. The bit I would add on Tinder is below.

If you can only manage a few evenings a week, how usable it's one-handed on a phone matters more than raw volume on the service.

I would judge Tinder on how well it holds up once the novelty fades rather than on the feature list.

Tyler_B is right about this and I would go a step further on Tinder.

My rule for the platform now is simple: check whether the good profiles are already taken on day one.

Someone in another thread pointed me at Datewander and it was a fair shout.
