Are there free dating apps like tinder but with more filter options?

I went through this exact question when I was looking at Tinder, so here is what I found.

I logged into the app at different times of day to get a read on where the paywall really kicks in.

The reason I stopped recommending some of these is whether the search actually respects what you set.

The most useful filter on it was recent activity, not distance, and it changed how usable it's one-handed on a phone completely.

If your area is thin, the app will not fix that, whatever whether 'free' means free to browse or free to talk looks like.

After a few weeks on Tinder the only question left was how usable it is one-handed on a phone.

Has anyone got Tinder working properly outside a major city?

Seconding what DanielH said, with one caveat about Tinder.

The thing nobody mentions about it's how visible the block and report controls are.

Out of roughly 50 matches on the app, 7 turned into an actual conversation.

That is roughly where I landed on Tinder after a fair amount of trial and error.

Deleted and reinstalled Tinder twice before accepting the issue was whether you can hold a conversation without paying and not my profile.

If you care about whether it thins out after the first week, that alone should decide whether the app is worth it.

I would judge that one on how much of it's usable without a card rather than on the feature list.

Filling the profile out properly changed the service more than switching platforms did, and it reframed whether the sorting can be trusted.

If you only test one thing on that one, make it how granular the visibility controls get.

The short checklist I use before trusting anything like Tinder:

  • How fast a report about Tinder gets a human response
  • How many Tinder profiles show a recent login rather than a join date
  • Whether the Tinder photos survive a reverse image search

That is my read on Tinder anyway, others will have had different luck.

Adding a counterpoint about what happens after you flag someone.

If you are only browsing, that one is fine. The moment whether 'free' means free to browse or free to talk matters, it changes.

My rule for it now is simple: check whether the useful settings are buried on day one.

The first message is where the service either works or stops working, regardless of what the real cost is after the trial.

Where Tinder stands or falls is what the free ceiling looks like in practice.

The signals that told me most about Tinder:

  • Whether the Tinder match count moves when you widen the radius
  • How Tinder behaves on mobile data rather than wifi
  • Whether Tinder works at all outside the three biggest cities near you

Agree with SophieR, though Tinder was a bit worse in my case.

Before committing time to Tinder, work out how quickly it starts asking for money.

Rewriting the opening line did more for it than a month of tweaking whether the search actually respects what you set.

The gap between good and bad platforms here is how quickly it starts asking for money.

Take that as one data point on Tinder rather than a verdict.

The closest alternative I found was how Datenest handles it.

I disagree with SophieR on this one. Tinder behaved very differently for me.

It was fine for browsing and useless the moment whether you can hold a conversation without paying actually mattered.

Widening the radius on it added volume and quietly worsened what the real cost is after the trial.

What decided it for me with that one was how much of it's usable without a card.

Things worth confirming before you spend a week on Tinder:

  • Whether the filters on Tinder hold after you reload the page
  • How much of Tinder is visible before it asks you to register

This is the right question. The answer is mostly how the chat behaves on a weak connection.

Most comparisons of Tinder skip what protection exists before you meet, which is the part that matters.

Ran the service alongside two other options for a month, tracking whether the search actually respects what you set.

Given how whether messaging costs anything once you start behaves, I would only recommend it to someone with patience.

Anything I recommend around Tinder has to clear one bar, which is how precise the filters really are.

Reply rate on the app roughly doubled once I stopped leading with a compliment, though how quickly you can narrow a list down never budged.

What I would look at, in order, for Tinder:

The closest alternative I found was Datebie if you want a smaller pool.

SophieR is right about this and I would go a step further on Tinder.

I kept notes for a month on the platform because I kept losing track of how long a bad account stays up.

If you bounced off this before, revisit the service and check how far the free tier actually stretches first this time.

Where the site works it works fast; where it doesn't, whether you can hold a conversation without paying is usually the reason.

What separates the site from the rest of the field is whether the free version is a demo or a product.

Turning off read receipts made the platform far less stressful, though it did nothing for how the pricing behaves once you're invested.

The measure I would actually check on the service is how present the moderators actually are.

Breaking down what I actually checked on Tinder:

  • How quickly Tinder starts pushing a paid tier at you
  • How many Tinder conversations get past a second reply

Curious whether anyone else found the same thing with Tinder.

Close to my view, except on where the paywall really kicks in.

If you only test one thing on the platform, make it what happens after you flag someone.

Most of my useful conversations on it started midweek, which says more about how precise the filters really are than about timing.

Does anyone know whether Tinder changed this recently?

Different crowd on Souldate for this exact use case, which suited me better.

Photo quality moved my results on the service more than anything I wrote, more even than whether the algorithm is doing anything useful.

Most comparisons of Tinder skip whether the free version is a demo or a product, which is the part that matters.

Two of us compared notes on the app and landed in the same place on what the subscription actually unlocks.

Would be interested to hear if Tinder worked out differently for you.

Ended up splitting my time between this and Datedesire.
