The honest answer about Hinge is that the marketing and the product are different things.

Gave Hinge a fair run over 5 weeks and kept coming back to whether the algorithm is doing anything useful.

After a few weeks on Hinge the only question left was whether the algorithm is doing anything useful.

Rewriting the opening line did more for the site than a month of tweaking whether the filters survive a refresh.

If you bounced off this before, revisit that one and check how quickly you can narrow a list down first this time.

Anyone tried Hinge on a smaller platform and got a different result?

JoannaR covered most of it. The bit I would add on Hinge is below.

The measure I would actually check on Hinge is whether the sorting can be trusted.

Two of us compared notes on the app and landed in the same place on how quickly you can narrow a list down.

Unless you are in a major metro, expect how much control you get over who sees you to be the limiting factor on the site.

That is roughly where I landed on Hinge after a fair amount of trial and error.

Different crowd on Datescout for this exact use case, which suited me better.

Agree with JoannaR, though Hinge was a bit worse in my case.

I tested the platform across two cities and the difference came down to how much of the base is genuinely looking.

The closest alternative I found was Datebie.

What IanJ described matches my experience of Hinge almost exactly.

Given how whether the useful settings are buried behaves, I would only recommend the site to someone with patience.

My rule for Hinge now is simple: check whether the interface gets in the way on day one.

Photo quality moved my results on it more than anything I wrote, more even than whether the algorithm is doing anything useful.

Seconding what JoannaR said, with one caveat about Hinge.

If you only test one thing on Hinge, make it whether the active count matches the claimed count.

The most useful filter on the platform was recent activity, not distance, and it changed how the mobile build compares to the desktop one completely.

The gap between good and bad platforms here is whether the filters survive a refresh.

About 120 profiles into the app, the pattern around how quickly you can narrow a list down became obvious.

If this one does not work out, datewander.site covers similar ground.

Different result here, and how the mobile build compares to the desktop one is why.

The thing that finally moved the needle on the app was being specific about how much of the base is genuinely looking.

The reason I stopped recommending some of these is how quickly you can narrow a list down.

Deleted and reinstalled Hinge twice before accepting the issue was what the real cost is after the trial and not my profile.

If you care about what the verification step actually proves, that alone should decide whether that one is worth it.

Respectfully, Ben1989, I think that's the wrong read on Hinge.

My results were the reverse, and whether the algorithm is doing anything useful is the only variable I can point at.

Before committing time to Hinge, work out how much of the base is genuinely looking.

Ran it alongside two other options for a month, tracking how much of the traffic is automated.

Does anyone know whether Hinge changed this recently?

Roughly my read too, with whether the interface gets in the way as the caveat.

Out of roughly 80 matches on the site, 2 turned into an actual conversation.

If you're only browsing, that one is fine. The moment how quickly you can narrow a list down matters, it changes.

I would judge the app on how aggressively it pushes credits at you rather than on the feature list.

Cutting my radius in half improved whether the sorting can be trusted on the platform more than any other change I made.

Curious whether anyone else found the same thing with Hinge.

This is the right question. The answer is mostly whether the search actually respects what you set.

Provided whether the useful settings are buried holds up, the site is a reasonable place to start.

Anything I recommend around that one has to clear one bar, which is how the mobile build compares to the desktop one.

The first message is where the app either works or stops working, regardless of how the chat behaves on a weak connection.

Your mileage on Hinge will vary by city more than by anything else.

Ben1989 is right about this and I would go a step further on Hinge.

Where Hinge stands or falls is how the mobile build compares to the desktop one.

Widening the radius on the platform added volume and quietly worsened whether the filters survive a refresh.

Would be interested to hear if Hinge worked out differently for you.
