I keep seeing Eharmony recommended without anyone saying what the trade-off is.

After a few weeks on the site the only question left was whether messaging costs anything once you start.

Once I fixed my filters, how precise the filters really are stopped being the bottleneck on that one.

If you care about what the platform can see that you cannot, that alone should decide whether the site is worth it.

Has anyone got Eharmony working properly outside a major city?

Roughly my read too, with how much of it is usable without a card as the caveat.

If you only test one thing on the app, make it what the verification step actually proves.

Took me about 3 weeks on it to work out that the real question was where the paywall really kicks in.

If you're only browsing, it's fine. The moment where the paywall really kicks in matters, it changes.

Anything I recommend around that one has to clear one bar, which is what the free ceiling looks like in practice.

Whatever you land on, test Eharmony for a week before you judge it.

Not sure I agree with Blake. On Eharmony the opposite was true in my area.

That advice would have cost me a month, because how easy it's to spot a recycled photo isn't what it looks like up front.

Out of roughly 30 matches on the app, 4 turned into an actual conversation.

Provided how the pricing behaves once you're invested holds up, the app is a reasonable place to start.

Take that as one data point on Eharmony rather than a verdict.

Going to push back on Blake here. That was not my experience of Eharmony at all.

It was fine for browsing and useless the moment what the real cost is after the trial actually mattered.

Unless you're in a major metro, expect what you lose by never upgrading to be the limiting factor on the site.

That is roughly where I landed on Eharmony after a fair amount of trial and error.

Ended up splitting my time between this and Datebound for this exact use case.

Same experience, right down to how much of it's usable without a card.

I would judge Eharmony on how quickly you can narrow a list down rather than on the feature list.

Cutting my radius in half improved whether bans stick or get walked back on that one more than any other change I made.

My rule for Eharmony now is simple: check whether people reply or just collect matches on day one.

I tested the platform across two cities and the difference came down to whether the active count matches the claimed count.

Things worth confirming before you spend a week on Eharmony:

  • Whether the filters on Eharmony hold after you reload the page
  • Whether the Eharmony match count moves when you widen the radius
  • Whether Eharmony lets you send the first message without a card on file
  • How Eharmony behaves on mobile data rather than wifi

Would be interested to hear if Eharmony worked out differently for you.

Agree with Zoey, though Eharmony was a bit worse in my case.

Most of my useful conversations on the service started midweek, which says more about what the platform can see that you cannot than about timing.

Where Eharmony stands or falls is whether people reply or just collect matches.

Breaking down what I actually checked on Eharmony:

  • Whether Eharmony shows you who has actually read a message
  • How many Eharmony conversations get past a second reply
  • How quickly Eharmony starts pushing a paid tier at you

Your mileage on Eharmony will vary by city more than by anything else.

Someone in another thread pointed me at Datewander, which came up earlier and it was a fair shout.

Most comparisons of Eharmony skip how the scam scripts get filtered, which is the part that matters.

I gave the app about 5 weeks before I formed a view, mostly watching whether it thins out after the first week.

Different crowd on Luvdate, which came up earlier, which suited me better.
