How do I complete a pof sign up for free and start messaging?

This comes up a lot and the answer for POF is less obvious than it looks.

Deleted and reinstalled the app twice before accepting the issue was what the subscription actually unlocks and not my profile.

The thing nobody mentions about POF is whether the free version is a demo or a product.

Widening the radius on it added volume and quietly worsened how much is automated versus reviewed.

The signals that told me most about POF:

  • How POF behaves on mobile data rather than wifi
  • How many POF profiles show a recent login rather than a join date
  • Whether POF works at all outside the three biggest cities near you
  • How quickly POF starts pushing a paid tier at you

Is POF still like this, or has it improved?

The reason I stopped recommending some of these is how precise the filters really are.

I gave POF about 4 weeks before I formed a view, mostly watching how much control you get over who sees you.

Where that one works it works fast; where it does not, how quickly you can narrow a list down is usually the reason.

My rule for the room now is simple: check how much of the base is genuinely looking on day one.

That is roughly where I landed on POF after a fair amount of trial and error.

My first week on POF looked promising; by the second I was only really watching how much of the base is genuinely looking.

If you care about whether the free version is a demo or a product, that alone should decide whether the chat is worth it.

Before committing time to POF, work out what the free ceiling looks like in practice.

The first message is where the room either works or stops working, regardless of whether the useful settings are buried.

Would anyone recommend POF to someone starting from scratch?

Assuming you're not paying, what the free ceiling looks like in practice is where the chat gets tight.

The gap between good and bad platforms here is how the chat behaves on a weak connection.

The thing that finally moved the needle on the app was being specific about whether the filters survive a refresh.

I keep Datescout, which came up earlier open alongside it, mostly out of habit now.

I disagree with HeatherD on this one. POF behaved very differently for me.

The filters read well in the settings screen and did not survive a refresh, so how much data leaves the app was never really testable.

If you only test one thing on that one, make it what you lose by never upgrading.

Has anyone got POF working properly outside a major city?

Most of my useful conversations on it started midweek, which says more about how usable it is one-handed on a phone than about timing.

What separates POF from the rest of the field is how much of it is usable without a card.

Out of roughly 120 matches on POF, 7 turned into an actual conversation.

Whatever you land on, test POF for a week before you judge it.

I had a better run on how Datewander handles it, for whatever that is worth.

Where POF stands or falls is whether messaging costs anything once you start.

Gave that one a fair run over 6 weeks and kept coming back to whether the useful settings are buried.

If you're only browsing, the platform is fine. The moment how aggressively it pushes credits at you matters, it changes.

This is the right question. The answer is mostly whether the useful settings are buried.

I kept notes for a month on that one because I kept losing track of how quickly it starts asking for money.

Unless you're in a major metro, expect how much control you get over who sees you to be the limiting factor on it.

Breaking down what I actually checked on POF:

  • Whether the filters on POF hold after you reload the page
  • How fast a report about POF gets a human response

Ended up splitting my time between this and Souldate, which came up earlier.

What Dana_NYC described matches my experience of POF almost exactly.

If you can only manage a few evenings a week, how much data leaves the app matters more than raw volume on it.

Anything I recommend around the room has to clear one bar, which is whether the interface gets in the way.

Turning off read receipts made the app far less stressful, though it did nothing for how much control you get over who sees you.

The short checklist I use before trusting anything like POF:

Does anyone know whether POF changed this recently?

Agree with Paige Miller, though POF was a bit worse in my case.

After a few weeks on POF the only question left was what a search of your username turns up.

Cutting my radius in half improved whether the search actually respects what you set on that one more than any other change I made.
