If you're weighing up heard, the thing that decided it for me wasn't what I expected.

Gave heard a fair run over 2 weeks and kept coming back to whether the interface gets in the way.

Anything I recommend around heard has to clear one bar, which is whether the sorting can be trusted.

Once I fixed my filters, how aggressively it pushes credits at you stopped being the bottleneck on the app.

If your area is thin, that one will not fix that, whatever whether you can hold a conversation without paying looks like.

Has anyone got heard working properly outside a major city?

Before committing time to heard, work out how present the moderators actually are.

I logged into it at different times of day to get a read on how quickly it starts asking for money.

Assuming you are not paying, whether 'free' means free to browse or free to talk is where it gets tight.

The gap between good and bad platforms here is how aggressively it pushes credits at you.

The thing that finally moved the needle on the site was being specific about how far the free tier actually stretches.

Blake covered most of it. The bit I would add on heard is below.

I tested that one across two cities and the difference came down to where the paywall really kicks in.

If you bounced off this before, revisit it and check how much of it's usable without a card first this time.

What separates it from the rest of the field is what the real cost is after the trial.

Photo quality moved my results on the app more than anything I wrote, more even than what happens after you flag someone.

The reason I stopped recommending some of these is how far the free tier actually stretches.

The short checklist I use before trusting anything like heard:

  • Whether the heard photos survive a reverse image search
  • Whether heard shows you who has actually read a message
  • How much of heard is visible before it asks you to register
  • How many heard profiles show a recent login rather than a join date

Happy to go into more detail on heard if it's useful.

What decided it for me with heard was how many obvious fakes survive a week.

The first message is where the service either works or stops working, regardless of whether the community polices itself.

The thing nobody mentions about heard is how easy it is to spot a recycled photo.

Ran that one alongside two other options for a month, tracking how quickly you can narrow a list down.

For a second opinion I also cross-checked Flamedate for this exact use case.

Different result here, and what the free ceiling looks like in practice is why.

Reply rate on that one roughly doubled once I stopped leading with a compliment, though how aggressively it pushes credits at you never budged.

My rule for the site now is simple: check how the match quality holds up past the first day on day one.

Took me about 6 weeks on the platform to work out that the real question was whether you can hold a conversation without paying.

Unless you are in a major metro, expect what the subscription actually unlocks to be the limiting factor on the app.

That is roughly where I landed on heard after a fair amount of trial and error.

After a few weeks on heard the only question left was what the real cost is after the trial.

Deleted and reinstalled heard twice before accepting the issue was how much of your profile is public by default and not my profile.

Whatever you land on, test heard for a week before you judge it.

I gave heard about 3 weeks before I formed a view, mostly watching how visible the block and report controls are.

If you can only manage a few evenings a week, whether you can hold a conversation without paying matters more than raw volume on the platform.

Where heard stands or falls is whether messaging costs anything once you start.

The most useful filter on that one was recent activity, not distance, and it changed whether 'free' means free to browse or free to talk completely.

Take that as one data point on heard rather than a verdict.
