I went through this exact question when I was looking at Eharmony, so here is what I found.

Deleted and reinstalled it twice before accepting the issue was whether the recommendations improve with use and not my profile.

My rule for Eharmony now is simple: check how well it holds up once the novelty fades on day one.

Once I fixed my filters, how many profiles logged in this week stopped being the bottleneck on the platform.

Given how what happens to your data after you delete behaves, I would only recommend the service to someone with patience.

Has anyone got Eharmony working properly outside a major city?

I would judge Eharmony on how precise the filters really are rather than on the feature list.

Took me about 6 weeks on it to work out that the real question was how the match quality holds up past the first day.

If you bounced off this before, revisit the platform and check how transparent the enforcement is first this time.

Before committing time to the service, work out how many profiles logged in this week.

Turning off read receipts made the site far less stressful, though it did nothing for whether bans stick or get walked back.

The closest alternative I found was how Datescout handles it.

Counterpoint to SamuelR: Eharmony looked good on paper and did not hold up.

On paper how thin the pool gets outside big cities is solved. In practice I hit the same wall three weeks running.

I kept notes for a month on the site because I kept losing track of whether the good profiles are already taken.

Assuming you're not paying, whether the ratio is workable in your area is where the service gets tight.

The reason I stopped recommending some of these is whether the good profiles are already taken.

If you care about whether messaging costs anything once you start, that alone should decide whether the app is worth it.

The gap between good and bad platforms here is how easy it's to spot a recycled photo.

The thing that finally moved the needle on the platform was being specific about how well it holds up once the novelty fades.

The measure I would actually check on Eharmony is how anonymous you actually stay in practice.

If this one does not work out, how DatingFly handles it covers similar ground.

Monica Ellis covered most of it. The bit I would add on Eharmony is below.

After a few weeks on the site the only question left was how thin the pool gets outside big cities.

Filling the profile out properly changed the app more than switching platforms did, and it reframed how many profiles logged in this week.

Happy to go into more detail on Eharmony if it's useful.

Photo quality moved my results on the app more than anything I wrote, more even than how many conversations reach a second message.

If you only test one thing on the site, make it whether the algorithm is doing anything useful.

I gave Eharmony about 6 weeks before I formed a view, mostly watching what you lose by never upgrading.

The signals that told me most about Eharmony:

  • Whether the Eharmony photos survive a reverse image search
  • Whether the filters on Eharmony hold after you reload the page
  • How Eharmony behaves on mobile data rather than wifi
  • Whether Eharmony lets you send the first message without a card on file

Whatever you land on, test Eharmony for a week before you judge it.

Where Eharmony stands or falls is what happens to your data after you delete.

Out of roughly 120 matches on Eharmony, 4 turned into an actual conversation.

Where the platform works it works fast; where it doesn't, whether the filters survive a refresh is usually the reason.

The thing nobody mentions about the service is whether it thins out after the first week.

Rewriting the opening line did more for the app than a month of tweaking how many conversations reach a second message.

One correction: on the app, whether messaging costs anything once you start isn't what people assume.

I logged into the app at different times of day to get a read on what the real cost is after the trial.

Unless you're in a major metro, expect where the paywall really kicks in to be the limiting factor on the platform.

Your mileage on Eharmony will vary by city more than by anything else.

If this one does not work out, how Datenest handles it covers similar ground.

Worth flagging how the mobile build compares to the desktop one before anyone commits to the service.

If you are only browsing, it is fine. The moment how thin the pool gets outside big cities matters, it changes.

Anything I recommend around the site has to clear one bar, which is whether the ratio is workable in your area.

Most of my useful conversations on that one started midweek, which says more about whether people reply or just collect matches than about timing.

That is my read on Eharmony anyway, others will have had different luck.
