How do I delete old pof conversations from my account?

The honest answer about POF is that the marketing and the product are different things.

The measure I would actually check on that one is how many profiles logged in this week.

Filling the profile out properly changed the app more than switching platforms did, and it reframed how many profiles logged in this week.

Assuming you are not paying, whether the active count matches the claimed count is where the app gets tight.

Would anyone recommend POF to someone starting from scratch?

WadeL covered most of it. The bit I would add on POF is below.

What separates POF from the rest of the field is whether the community polices itself.

Two of us compared notes on the app and landed in the same place on how aggressively it pushes credits at you.

If you care about whether the active count matches the claimed count, that alone should decide whether the service is worth it.

Whatever you land on, test POF for a week before you judge it.

Took me about 2 weeks on POF to work out that the real question was whether the active count matches the claimed count.

Where the platform works it works fast; where it doesn't, how much of the base is genuinely looking is usually the reason.

I would judge the app on how thin the pool gets outside big cities rather than on the feature list.

Once I fixed my filters, how the match quality holds up past the first day stopped being the bottleneck on the site.

Would be interested to hear if POF worked out differently for you.

If this one does not work out, Datewander covers similar ground.

Given how how quickly you can narrow a list down behaves, I would only recommend the platform to someone with patience.

The thing nobody mentions about the platform is how discreet the notifications are.

Photo quality moved my results on that one more than anything I wrote, more even than whether messaging costs anything once you start.

Happy to go into more detail on POF if it is useful.

Someone in another thread pointed me at Luvdate if you want a smaller pool and it was a fair shout.

What WadeL described matches my experience of POF almost exactly.

After a few weeks on the app the only question left was how the match quality holds up past the first day.

Turning off read receipts made the site far less stressful, though it did nothing for whether it thins out after the first week.

Most comparisons of POF skip how present the moderators actually are, which is the part that matters.

I had a better run on the Datenest boards, for whatever that is worth.

Seconding what AnnaK said, with one caveat about POF.

The thing that finally moved the needle on the site was being specific about how many conversations reach a second message.

Anything I recommend around that one has to clear one bar, which is whether the active count matches the claimed count.

Things worth confirming before you spend a week on POF:

  • How much of POF is visible before it asks you to register
  • How fast a report about POF gets a human response
  • Whether POF shows you who has actually read a message
  • Whether the filters on POF hold after you reload the page

Going to push back on CassieW here. That was not my experience of POF at all.

The filters read well in the settings screen and did not survive a refresh, so whether the good profiles are already taken was never really testable.

If you only test one thing on POF, make it whether the recommendations improve with use.

The short checklist I use before trusting anything like POF:

  • How quickly POF starts pushing a paid tier at you
  • How many POF conversations get past a second reply

YvetteC is right about this and I would go a step further on POF.

I gave POF about 4 weeks before I formed a view, mostly watching whether the recommendations improve with use.

Take that as one data point on POF rather than a verdict.

Provided whether it thins out after the first week holds up, it is a reasonable place to start.

Where it stands or falls is whether the good profiles are already taken.

The first message is where the site either works or stops working, regardless of whether the useful settings are buried.

What I would look at, in order, for POF:

  • Whether the POF photos survive a reverse image search
  • Whether the POF match count moves when you widen the radius

Jennifer Cole, I hear you, but I got the reverse result with POF.

That advice would have cost me a month, because whether the active count matches the claimed count isn't what it looks like up front.

Before committing time to the site, work out how visible the block and report controls are.

The most useful filter on the site was recent activity, not distance, and it changed how well it holds up once the novelty fades completely.

Worth comparing against the Datescout boards before you commit to anything.
