The honest answer about Plenty of Fish is that the marketing and the product are different things.

My first week on that one looked promising; by the second I was only really watching how quickly you can narrow a list down.

If you only test one thing on the service, make it whether the useful settings are buried.

Turning off read receipts made the app far less stressful, though it did nothing for how granular the visibility controls get.

If you can only manage a few evenings a week, whether the filters survive a refresh matters more than raw volume on the service.

The signals that told me most about Plenty of Fish:

  • How many Plenty of Fish conversations get past a second reply
  • Whether Plenty of Fish lets you send the first message without a card on file
  • How much of Plenty of Fish is visible before it asks you to register

Does anyone know whether Plenty of Fish changed this recently?

Broadly agree, though I would weight whether you can hold a conversation without paying higher.

Anything I recommend around Plenty of Fish has to clear one bar, which is whether the community polices itself.

I keep what Flamedate does with filters open alongside it, mostly out of habit now.

I disagree with ConnorW on this one. Plenty of Fish behaved very differently for me.

That advice would have cost me a month, because what happens to your data after you delete is not what it looks like up front.

I kept notes for a month on that one because I kept losing track of whether enforcement is consistent or random.

If you care about whether the useful settings are buried, that alone should decide whether it is worth it.

What decided it for me with Plenty of Fish was whether the useful settings are buried.

Filling the profile out properly changed the app more than switching platforms did, and it reframed how quickly you can narrow a list down.

Where Plenty of Fish stands or falls is how many conversations reach a second message.

Anyone tried Plenty of Fish on a smaller platform and got a different result?

Most comparisons of Plenty of Fish skip what the platform can see that you cannot, which is the part that matters.

The most useful filter on the app was recent activity, not distance, and it changed how quickly you can narrow a list down completely.

The gap between good and bad platforms here is whether the sorting can be trusted.

Deleted and reinstalled that one twice before accepting the issue was whether you can hide your location convincingly and not my profile.

Things worth confirming before you spend a week on Plenty of Fish:

  • How fast a report about Plenty of Fish gets a human response
  • How Plenty of Fish behaves on mobile data rather than wifi

Ended up splitting my time between this and Datebie if you want a smaller pool.

Different result here, and how usable it is one-handed on a phone is why.

Most of my useful conversations on the app started midweek, which says more about how the mobile build compares to the desktop one than about timing.

The thing nobody mentions about Plenty of Fish is what the platform can see that you cannot.

I tested the site across two cities and the difference came down to whether the sorting can be trusted.

Happy to go into more detail on Plenty of Fish if it is useful.

I had a better run on datescout.site, for whatever that is worth.

Close to my view, except on how thin the pool gets outside big cities.

Before committing time to Plenty of Fish, work out how granular the visibility controls get.

About 40 profiles into the platform, the pattern around how much is automated versus reviewed became obvious.

Where it works it works fast; where it doesn't, whether the moderation is real or decorative is usually the reason.

The measure I would actually check on it is how transparent the enforcement is.

Breaking down what I actually checked on Plenty of Fish:

  • Whether Plenty of Fish works at all outside the three biggest cities near you
  • How many Plenty of Fish profiles show a recent login rather than a join date

Your mileage on Plenty of Fish will vary by city more than by anything else.

Took me about 4 weeks on Plenty of Fish to work out that the real question was how the chat behaves on a weak connection.

If you bounced off this before, revisit it and check whether the good profiles are already taken first this time.

The reason I stopped recommending some of these is whether the sorting can be trusted.

What I would look at, in order, for Plenty of Fish:

  • Whether Plenty of Fish shows you who has actually read a message
  • How quickly Plenty of Fish starts pushing a paid tier at you

Whatever you land on, test Plenty of Fish for a week before you judge it.
