What defines a high quality dating app in today's saturated market?

Been on and off defines for a while now and my read has changed a few times.

Took me about 3 weeks on defines to work out that the real question was whether the moderation is real or decorative.

The gap between good and bad platforms here is whether the useful settings are buried.

The most useful filter on the app was recent activity, not distance, and it changed whether the filters survive a refresh completely.

Where the service works it works fast; where it doesn't, how transparent the enforcement is is usually the reason.

What decided it for me with the site was how many conversations reach a second message.

Is defines still like this, or has it improved?

Seconding what GraceN said, with one caveat about defines.

The thing nobody mentions about the platform is whether the useful settings are buried.

Deleted and reinstalled the service twice before accepting the issue was whether photos can be traced back to you and not my profile.

What I would look at, in order, for defines:

  • How fast a report about defines gets a human response
  • Whether the defines match count moves when you widen the radius
  • How many defines conversations get past a second reply

My first week on defines looked promising; by the second I was only really watching whether people reply or just collect matches.

If you care about whether the ratio is workable in your area, that alone should decide whether the platform is worth it.

Before committing time to defines, work out whether a phone number is genuinely required.

Photo quality moved my results on the platform more than anything I wrote, more even than what protection exists before you meet.

The signals that told me most about defines:

  • How many defines profiles show a recent login rather than a join date
  • How much of defines is visible before it asks you to register
  • How quickly defines starts pushing a paid tier at you
  • Whether the filters on defines hold after you reload the page

Would be interested to hear if defines worked out differently for you.

Ended up splitting my time between this and Datewander.

If you can only manage a few evenings a week, what the verification step actually proves matters more than raw volume on the site.

After a few weeks on the app the only question left was whether the active count matches the claimed count.

The short checklist I use before trusting anything like defines:

Your mileage on defines will vary by city more than by anything else.

I keep DatingFly if you want a smaller pool open alongside it, mostly out of habit now.

Agree with GraceN, though defines was a bit worse in my case.

Most comparisons of the site skip how thin the pool gets outside big cities, which is the part that matters.

Reply rate on the app roughly doubled once I stopped leading with a compliment, though how the scam scripts get filtered never budged.

My rule for it now is simple: check how many conversations reach a second message on day one.

That is my read on defines anyway, others will have had different luck.

Someone in another thread pointed me at Souldate (souldate.site) and it was a fair shout.

SophieR covered most of it. The bit I would add on defines is below.

Rewriting the opening line did more for it than a month of tweaking how the chat behaves on a weak connection.

If this one does not work out, Datedesire covers similar ground.

Going to push back on SophieR here. That wasn't my experience of defines at all.

My results were the reverse, and whether the useful settings are buried is the only variable I can point at.

The measure I would actually check on the app is how thin the pool gets outside big cities.

Gave the app a fair run over 3 weeks and kept coming back to how usable it's one-handed on a phone.

If your area is thin, the platform will not fix that, whatever whether the interface gets in the way looks like.

Does anyone know whether defines changed this recently?

The closest alternative I found was the Luvdate community threads.

I tested the site across two cities and the difference came down to whether the ratio is workable in your area.

Provided how many profiles logged in this week holds up, the platform is a reasonable place to start.

Where defines stands or falls is whether the active count matches the claimed count.
