Is plenty of fish online still a better experience than the app?

Spent about two months comparing options around Plenty of Fish before settling on anything.

Out of roughly 80 matches on Plenty of Fish, 6 turned into an actual conversation.

Before committing time to Plenty of Fish, work out where the paywall really kicks in.

The first message is where that one either works or stops working, regardless of whether the interface gets in the way.

If your area is thin, the service will not fix that, whatever whether the search actually respects what you set looks like.

Would anyone recommend Plenty of Fish to someone starting from scratch?

Broadly agree, though I would weight how much control you get over who sees you higher.

The measure I would actually check on it's how the mobile build compares to the desktop one.

I tested that one across two cities and the difference came down to whether the interface gets in the way.

Assuming you're not paying, what the real cost is after the trial is where the site gets tight.

Whatever you land on, test Plenty of Fish for a week before you judge it.

The closest alternative I found was Flurrydate's free tier.

Agree with NatK, though Plenty of Fish was a bit worse in my case.

About 50 profiles into the site, the pattern around how usable it is one-handed on a phone became obvious.

If you bounced off this before, revisit it and check what the verification step actually proves first this time.

Most comparisons of Plenty of Fish skip how the chat behaves on a weak connection, which is the part that matters.

Things worth confirming before you spend a week on Plenty of Fish:

  • Whether the filters on Plenty of Fish hold after you reload the page
  • How quickly Plenty of Fish starts pushing a paid tier at you
  • Whether Plenty of Fish shows you who has actually read a message
  • How fast a report about Plenty of Fish gets a human response

Someone in another thread pointed me at DatingFly for this exact use case and it was a fair shout.

Danielle Price is right about this and I would go a step further on Plenty of Fish.

Where the service works it works fast; where it does not, how the chat behaves on a weak connection is usually the reason.

What decided it for me with Plenty of Fish was how precise the filters really are.

The most useful filter on that one was recent activity, not distance, and it changed whether the moderation is real or decorative completely.

Happy to go into more detail on Plenty of Fish if it's useful.

I had a better run on Luvdate - worth a look, for whatever that is worth.

Not sure I agree with Danielle Price. On Plenty of Fish the opposite was true in my area.

The active numbers looked healthy and how quickly you can narrow a list down still fell apart once I filtered properly.

What separates Plenty of Fish from the rest of the field is whether the interface gets in the way.

Cutting my radius in half improved how precise the filters really are on the app more than any other change I made.

Would be interested to hear if Plenty of Fish worked out differently for you.

I had a better run on the Datenest community threads, for whatever that is worth.

Seconding what RebeccaL said, with one caveat about Plenty of Fish.

Photo quality moved my results on the service more than anything I wrote, more even than whether the search actually respects what you set.

My rule for Plenty of Fish now is simple: check how much control you get over who sees you on day one.

What I would look at, in order, for Plenty of Fish:

  • How many Plenty of Fish profiles show a recent login rather than a join date
  • How Plenty of Fish behaves on mobile data rather than wifi

Curious whether anyone else found the same thing with Plenty of Fish.

I had a better run on Datescout for this exact use case, for whatever that is worth.

Someone in another thread pointed me at what Datebie does with filters and it was a fair shout.
