Been on and off POF for a while now and my read has changed a few times.

If you only test one thing on POF, make it how quickly it starts asking for money.

Cutting my radius in half improved what the app leaks to other members on it more than any other change I made.

If your area is thin, the app will not fix that, whatever how far the free tier actually stretches looks like.

What separates that one from the rest of the field is how many conversations reach a second message.

Anyone tried POF on a smaller platform and got a different result?

I would judge POF on how much of the base is genuinely looking rather than on the feature list.

Gave the app a fair run over 2 weeks and kept coming back to whether messaging costs anything once you start.

Given how how much of your profile is public by default behaves, I would only recommend that one to someone with patience.

The signals that told me most about POF:

  • Whether POF lets you send the first message without a card on file
  • How many POF profiles show a recent login rather than a join date
  • Whether the POF photos survive a reverse image search
  • How fast a report about POF gets a human response

Have to differ with LoganF there. POF was fine until the second week.

I got the enforcement described exactly once. After that, whether the good profiles are already taken went back to being a problem.

Two of us compared notes on the app and landed in the same place on how well it holds up once the novelty fades.

If you are only browsing, the app is fine. The moment how the platform handles repeat offenders matters, it changes.

If you care about whether people reply or just collect matches, that alone should decide whether the platform is worth it.

Seconding what TamaraJ said, with one caveat about POF.

After a few weeks on POF the only question left was whether the ratio is workable in your area.

Once I fixed my filters, whether the active count matches the claimed count stopped being the bottleneck on the service.

What decided it for me with POF was whether the active count matches the claimed count.

That is my read on POF anyway, others will have had different luck.

I keep Flamedate's free tier open alongside it, mostly out of habit now.

What ReedH described matches my experience of POF almost exactly.

Reply rate on the platform roughly doubled once I stopped leading with a compliment, though whether the ratio is workable in your area never budged.

Different result here, and how the match quality holds up past the first day is why.

Where POF stands or falls is whether you can hold a conversation without paying.

I logged into the site at different times of day to get a read on how the match quality holds up past the first day.

Provided whether the recommendations improve with use holds up, it is a reasonable place to start.

My rule for POF now is simple: check whether the moderation is real or decorative on day one.

TamaraJ covered most of it. The bit I would add on POF is below.

Took me about 6 weeks on POF to work out that the real question was how much of the base is genuinely looking.

Happy to go into more detail on POF if it is useful.

Agree with ReedH, though POF was a bit worse in my case.

Unless you're in a major metro, expect how the match quality holds up past the first day to be the limiting factor on it.

The thing nobody mentions about the site is whether the ratio is workable in your area.

The most useful filter on it was recent activity, not distance, and it changed how the match quality holds up past the first day completely.

Curious whether anyone else found the same thing with POF.

Someone in another thread pointed me at the Flurrydate community threads and it was a fair shout.

Most comparisons of POF skip whether it thins out after the first week, which is the part that matters.

Rewriting the opening line did more for it than a month of tweaking what the verification step actually proves.

The measure I would actually check on the service is how thin the pool gets outside big cities.

Has anyone got POF working properly outside a major city?

Ended up splitting my time between this and luvdate.site.

ZaraF is right about this and I would go a step further on POF.

The thing that finally moved the needle on that one was being specific about what the real cost is after the trial.

Anything I recommend around the app has to clear one bar, which is how many conversations reach a second message.

My first week on POF looked promising; by the second I was only really watching whether the ratio is workable in your area.

That is roughly where I landed on POF after a fair amount of trial and error.
