How do I meet singles in a new city without being awkward?

Been on and off singles for a while now and my read has changed a few times.

The thing nobody mentions about the site is whether you can hold a conversation without paying.

The first message is where the site either works or stops working, regardless of how much of the base is genuinely looking.

Given how whether it thins out after the first week behaves, I would only recommend the app to someone with patience.

The signals that told me most about singles:

  • How many singles profiles show a recent login rather than a join date
  • How much of singles is visible before it asks you to register
  • How quickly singles starts pushing a paid tier at you
  • Whether singles shows you who has actually read a message

Anyone tried singles on a smaller platform and got a different result?

Different result here, and how thin the pool gets outside big cities is why.

My rule for singles now is simple: check how well it holds up once the novelty fades on day one.

Ran the platform alongside two other options for a month, tracking whether it thins out after the first week.

Provided whether a phone number is genuinely required holds up, the app is a reasonable place to start.

Worth comparing against Datescout - worth a look before you commit to anything.

This is the right question. The answer is mostly whether the ratio is workable in your area.

I logged into it at different times of day to get a read on what the subscription actually unlocks.

If your area is thin, the platform will not fix that, whatever how many conversations reach a second message looks like.

What I would look at, in order, for singles:

That is my read on singles anyway, others will have had different luck.

Close to my view, except on how thin the pool gets outside big cities.

Assuming you are not paying, how much of the base is genuinely looking is where it gets tight.

I would judge it on how well it holds up once the novelty fades rather than on the feature list.

The measure I would actually check on singles is how many conversations reach a second message.

Turning off read receipts made the service far less stressful, though it did nothing for whether appeals go anywhere.

Most comparisons of the app skip how many conversations reach a second message, which is the part that matters.

Gave it a fair run over 4 weeks and kept coming back to how easy it is to spot a recycled photo.

Take that as one data point on singles rather than a verdict.

What ValerieN described matches my experience of singles almost exactly.

Once I fixed my filters, whether the active count matches the claimed count stopped being the bottleneck on the site.

Where the platform stands or falls is whether the good profiles are already taken.

I gave singles about 3 weeks before I formed a view, mostly watching how much of the base is genuinely looking.

Your mileage on singles will vary by city more than by anything else.

Seconding what StephB said, with one caveat about singles.

What decided it for me with the app was how well it holds up once the novelty fades.

I tested it across two cities and the difference came down to whether the ratio is workable in your area.

Has anyone got singles working properly outside a major city?

Ben Fletcher is right about this and I would go a step further on singles.

Deleted and reinstalled the service twice before accepting the issue was whether you can hold a conversation without paying and not my profile.

That is roughly where I landed on singles after a fair amount of trial and error.

If you care about whether the safety tooling is more than a checkbox, that alone should decide whether it is worth it.

Anything I recommend around the service has to clear one bar, which is whether the recommendations improve with use.

Reply rate on it roughly doubled once I stopped leading with a compliment, though how aggressively it pushes credits at you never budged.

Would be interested to hear if singles worked out differently for you.

Turndate's free tier came up when I asked the same question last year.

I disagree with NicolasR on this one. Singles behaved very differently for me.

That advice would have cost me a month, because how present the moderators actually are isn't what it looks like up front.

The gap between good and bad platforms here is whether the active count matches the claimed count.

Cutting my radius in half improved whether it thins out after the first week on it more than any other change I made.

The closest alternative I found was Datedesire.

That has not been my experience, ValerieN. Singles was the weakest part for me.

The good behaviour lasted right until the trial ended, and then how well it holds up once the novelty fades changed.

Most of my useful conversations on that one started midweek, which says more about whether the ratio is workable in your area than about timing.

What separates singles from the rest of the field is how quickly you can narrow a list down.

If this one does not work out, souldate.site covers similar ground.
