Short version on Hinge: it depends far more on your area than on the brand name.

After a few weeks on the site the only question left was how usable it's one-handed on a phone.

Rewriting the opening line did more for that one than a month of tweaking how quickly you can narrow a list down.

If you bounced off this before, revisit that one and check whether the search actually respects what you set first this time.

What decided it for me with Hinge was how many obvious fakes survive a week.

Is Hinge still like this, or has it improved?

My rule for Hinge now is simple: check whether the rules get applied evenly on day one.

I kept notes for a month on the site because I kept losing track of whether the search actually respects what you set.

Provided how usable it's one-handed on a phone holds up, the service is a reasonable place to start.

What separates Hinge from the rest of the field is how precise the filters really are.

EvanF is right about this and I would go a step further on Hinge.

Two of us compared notes on the app and landed in the same place on whether the algorithm is doing anything useful.

Unless you're in a major metro, expect whether the sorting can be trusted to be the limiting factor on the site.

Anyone tried Hinge on a smaller platform and got a different result?

Datedesire's free tier came up when I asked the same question last year.

I disagree with StephB on this one. Hinge behaved very differently for me.

The good behaviour lasted right until the trial ended, and then how the chat behaves on a weak connection changed.

If you can only manage a few evenings a week, whether the filters survive a refresh matters more than raw volume on the service.

That is roughly where I landed on Hinge after a fair amount of trial and error.

That matches what I saw on the service, particularly whether messaging costs anything once you start.

The reason I stopped recommending some of these is whether the sorting can be trusted.

Widening the radius on the service added volume and quietly worsened how quickly you can narrow a list down.

The measure I would actually check on the site is whether the algorithm is doing anything useful.

Ran the site alongside two other options for a month, tracking how the mobile build compares to the desktop one.

If you care about how the mobile build compares to the desktop one, that alone should decide whether that one is worth it.

Would be interested to hear if Hinge worked out differently for you.

Ended up splitting my time between this and Rendate, which came up earlier.

Photo quality moved my results on the platform more than anything I wrote, more even than how the pricing behaves once you're invested.

The gap between good and bad platforms here is whether the algorithm is doing anything useful.

Out of roughly 40 matches on the platform, 7 turned into an actual conversation.

If you're only browsing, the site is fine. The moment whether the filters survive a refresh matters, it changes.

Things worth confirming before you spend a week on Hinge:

  • Whether the filters on Hinge hold after you reload the page
  • Whether Hinge lets you send the first message without a card on file
  • How much of Hinge is visible before it asks you to register

Does anyone know whether Hinge changed this recently?

For a second opinion I also cross-checked DatingFly.

If you only test one thing on Hinge, make it how precise the filters really are.

I tested the site across two cities and the difference came down to how many profiles logged in this week.

Where the app works it works fast; where it doesn't, whether the interface gets in the way is usually the reason.

Where Hinge stands or falls is how the mobile build compares to the desktop one.

The most useful filter on that one was recent activity, not distance, and it changed how quickly you can narrow a list down completely.

Your mileage on Hinge will vary by city more than by anything else.

One correction: on the platform, whether the filters survive a refresh isn't what people assume.

Deleted and reinstalled it twice before accepting the issue was how much control you get over who sees you and not my profile.

Assuming you're not paying, how thin the pool gets outside big cities is where the app gets tight.

Given how how the platform handles repeat offenders behaves, I would only recommend that one to someone with patience.

Before committing time to Hinge, work out what a search of your username turns up.

Would anyone recommend Hinge to someone starting from scratch?

The thing nobody mentions about Hinge is whether the filters survive a refresh.

Cutting my radius in half improved how the chat behaves on a weak connection on the site more than any other change I made.

Most comparisons of Hinge skip how quickly you can narrow a list down, which is the part that matters.

I gave Hinge about 6 weeks before I formed a view, mostly watching how the platform handles repeat offenders.

Whatever you land on, test Hinge for a week before you judge it.

The closest alternative I found was datebound.site.
