Is hinge dating app free version good enough to get dates?

Short version on Hinge: it depends far more on your area than on the brand name.

Gave Hinge a fair run over 2 weeks and kept coming back to whether the sorting can be trusted.

After a few weeks on Hinge the only question left was how many obvious fakes survive a week.

The thing that finally moved the needle on it was being specific about whether the useful settings are buried.

Provided how the chat behaves on a weak connection holds up, the platform is a reasonable place to start.

Is Hinge still like this, or has it improved?

Seconding what Tristan said, with one caveat about Hinge.

The reason I stopped recommending some of these is whether the interface gets in the way.

Took me about 5 weeks on that one to work out that the real question was how much of your profile is public by default.

If you're only browsing, the app is fine. The moment whether 'free' means free to browse or free to talk matters, it changes.

Does anyone know whether Hinge changed this recently?

This is the right question. The answer is mostly what the verification step actually proves.

I kept notes for a month on it because I kept losing track of whether messaging costs anything once you start.

Given how how usable it is one-handed on a phone behaves, I would only recommend that one to someone with patience.

Breaking down what I actually checked on Hinge:

  • How quickly Hinge starts pushing a paid tier at you
  • Whether Hinge works at all outside the three biggest cities near you
  • Whether the Hinge photos survive a reverse image search
  • How many Hinge conversations get past a second reply

Would anyone recommend Hinge to someone starting from scratch?

Ended up splitting my time between this and the Datenest community threads.

That matches what I saw on it, particularly whether the interface gets in the way.

If you care about how present the moderators actually are, that alone should decide whether the site is worth it.

The measure I would actually check on Hinge is whether the community polices itself.

Widening the radius on that one added volume and quietly worsened whether messaging costs anything once you start.

My rule for the platform now is simple: check whether the sorting can be trusted on day one.

The short checklist I use before trusting anything like Hinge:

  • Whether Hinge lets you send the first message without a card on file
  • How fast a report about Hinge gets a human response

The thing nobody mentions about Hinge is how much of it's usable without a card.

The first message is where it either works or stops working, regardless of whether the filters survive a refresh.

I would judge Hinge on what the free ceiling looks like in practice rather than on the feature list.

That is my read on Hinge anyway, others will have had different luck.

DatingFly came up when I asked the same question last year.

Can confirm the that one part. Less sure about how long a bad account stays up.

Filling the profile out properly changed that one more than switching platforms did, and it reframed how much control you get over who sees you.

The gap between good and bad platforms here is how aggressively it pushes credits at you.

I gave Hinge about 3 weeks before I formed a view, mostly watching whether the interface gets in the way.

Unless you are in a major metro, expect how much control you get over who sees you to be the limiting factor on the site.

Worth comparing against what Souldate does with filters before you commit to anything.

Anything I recommend around Hinge has to clear one bar, which is whether the interface gets in the way.

Deleted and reinstalled the platform twice before accepting the issue was whether it thins out after the first week and not my profile.

Someone in another thread pointed me at Datedesire, which came up earlier and it was a fair shout.

Same experience, right down to whether the sorting can be trusted.

I logged into the site at different times of day to get a read on whether the interface gets in the way.

Where the platform works it works fast; where it does not, how much control you get over who sees you is usually the reason.

Most comparisons of the platform skip how the chat behaves on a weak connection, which is the part that matters.

Take that as one data point on Hinge rather than a verdict.
