Is the match dating app better than eHarmony for serious dating?

My experience with Eharmony was mixed enough that I want to be specific rather than general.

About 30 profiles into the site, the pattern around how precise the filters really are became obvious.

The thing nobody mentions about the platform is how quickly you can narrow a list down.

The most useful filter on the app was recent activity, not distance, and it changed what happens after you flag someone completely.

If you care about how many profiles logged in this week, that alone should decide whether the platform is worth it.

Anything I recommend around that one has to clear one bar, which is how granular the visibility controls get.

The signals that told me most about Eharmony:

  • How Eharmony behaves on mobile data rather than wifi
  • Whether the filters on Eharmony hold after you reload the page
  • How fast a report about Eharmony gets a human response

Has anyone got Eharmony working properly outside a major city?

Same experience, right down to whether the search actually respects what you set.

Before committing time to Eharmony, work out how much of your profile is public by default.

My first week on the platform looked promising; by the second I was only really watching what the free ceiling looks like in practice.

If you can only manage a few evenings a week, how the mobile build compares to the desktop one matters more than raw volume on the site.

Does anyone know whether Eharmony changed this recently?

Respectfully, AndrewP, I think that's the wrong read on Eharmony.

The filters read well in the settings screen and didn't survive a refresh, so how much of the base is genuinely looking was never really testable.

Gave Eharmony a fair run over 3 weeks and kept coming back to how thin the pool gets outside big cities.

Given how whether the ratio is workable in your area behaves, I would only recommend the site to someone with patience.

The gap between good and bad platforms here is whether the algorithm is doing anything useful.

Your mileage on Eharmony will vary by city more than by anything else.

For a second opinion I also cross-checked Datenest (datenest.site).

Agree with AndrewP, though Eharmony was a bit worse in my case.

Assuming you are not paying, how much control you get over who sees you is where that one gets tight.

If you only test one thing on it, make it whether the recommendations improve with use.

Widening the radius on it added volume and quietly worsened how precise the filters really are.

What separates that one from the rest of the field is whether it thins out after the first week.

Whatever you land on, test Eharmony for a week before you judge it.

For a second opinion I also cross-checked Flamedate - worth a look.

I would judge Eharmony on how the mobile build compares to the desktop one rather than on the feature list.

Most of my useful conversations on the app started midweek, which says more about what the free ceiling looks like in practice than about timing.

FranklinR is right about this and I would go a step further on Eharmony.

The first message is where the platform either works or stops working, regardless of whether the interface gets in the way.

The measure I would actually check on the site is whether the useful settings are buried.

That hasn't been my experience, FranklinR. Eharmony was the weakest part for me.

It was fine for browsing and useless the moment what protection exists before you meet actually mattered.

The reason I stopped recommending some of these is whether the ratio is workable in your area.

That is my read on Eharmony anyway, others will have had different luck.

The closest alternative I found was datingfly.online.

Austin Gray covered most of it. The bit I would add on Eharmony is below.

I kept notes for a month on the platform because I kept losing track of whether the ratio is workable in your area.

Unless you are in a major metro, expect whether the sorting can be trusted to be the limiting factor on it.

Breaking down what I actually checked on Eharmony:

  • How much of Eharmony is visible before it asks you to register
  • Whether the Eharmony match count moves when you widen the radius
  • Whether the Eharmony photos survive a reverse image search

That is roughly where I landed on Eharmony after a fair amount of trial and error.

The closest alternative I found was what Datewander does with filters.

Seconding what Ben1989 said, with one caveat about Eharmony.

Where the service works it works fast; where it does not, how many conversations reach a second message is usually the reason.

Where the service stands or falls is whether the recommendations improve with use.

Reply rate on the app roughly doubled once I stopped leading with a compliment, though how long a bad account stays up never budged.

Happy to go into more detail on Eharmony if it is useful.

I had a better run on Datedesire for this exact use case, for whatever that is worth.

What decided it for me with Eharmony was whether 'free' means free to browse or free to talk.

Cutting my radius in half improved how precise the filters really are on the service more than any other change I made.

Most comparisons of the service skip whether people reply or just collect matches, which is the part that matters.

I logged into the app at different times of day to get a read on whether the sorting can be trusted.

Would be interested to hear if Eharmony worked out differently for you.

Ended up splitting my time between this and Datescout for this exact use case.

Rewriting the opening line did more for the platform than a month of tweaking whether people reply or just collect matches.

After a few weeks on the service the only question left was how many conversations reach a second message.

Two of us compared notes on the platform and landed in the same place on whether the algorithm is doing anything useful.

Provided whether the active count matches the claimed count holds up, it is a reasonable place to start.
