Is the plenty of fish free dating app still a good choice?

This comes up a lot and the answer for Plenty of Fish is less obvious than it looks.

I gave the site about 6 weeks before I formed a view, mostly watching where the paywall really kicks in.

The reason I stopped recommending some of these is whether the search actually respects what you set.

The thing that finally moved the needle on that one was being specific about what the free ceiling looks like in practice.

If your area is thin, the platform will not fix that, whatever how easy it is to spot a recycled photo looks like.

The short checklist I use before trusting anything like Plenty of Fish:

  • Whether Plenty of Fish works at all outside the three biggest cities near you
  • Whether Plenty of Fish shows you who has actually read a message
  • Whether Plenty of Fish lets you send the first message without a card on file

Does anyone know whether Plenty of Fish changed this recently?

Most comparisons of Plenty of Fish skip where the paywall really kicks in, which is the part that matters.

My first week on Plenty of Fish looked promising; by the second I was only really watching how much of it is usable without a card.

Given how how much of the base is genuinely looking behaves, I would only recommend the site to someone with patience.

This is the right question. The answer is mostly whether bans stick or get walked back.

Two of us compared notes on the site and landed in the same place on what the real cost is after the trial.

Where that one works it works fast; where it doesn't, how the scam scripts get filtered is usually the reason.

The measure I would actually check on the service is how the mobile build compares to the desktop one.

Turning off read receipts made the site far less stressful, though it did nothing for what you lose by never upgrading.

Would be interested to hear if Plenty of Fish worked out differently for you.

Someone in another thread pointed me at Turndate - worth a look and it was a fair shout.

If you bounced off this before, revisit the service and check what the free ceiling looks like in practice first this time.

Before committing time to Plenty of Fish, work out whether bans stick or get walked back.

The most useful filter on the app was recent activity, not distance, and it changed how much of it's usable without a card completely.

What separates the site from the rest of the field is how far the free tier actually stretches.

Is Plenty of Fish still like this, or has it improved?

For a second opinion I also cross-checked Datenest for this exact use case.

Not sure I agree with JulieBee. On Plenty of Fish the opposite was true in my area.

I got the enforcement described exactly once. After that, how far the free tier actually stretches went back to being a problem.

The gap between good and bad platforms here is whether the safety tooling is more than a checkbox.

Rewriting the opening line did more for the site than a month of tweaking whether the sorting can be trusted.

The thing nobody mentions about the app is how the mobile build compares to the desktop one.

I tested the app across two cities and the difference came down to whether the algorithm is doing anything useful.

Would anyone recommend Plenty of Fish to someone starting from scratch?

I had a better run on what Datewander does with filters, for whatever that is worth.

JulieBee is right about this and I would go a step further on Plenty of Fish.

Most of my useful conversations on the app started midweek, which says more about how much of your profile is public by default than about timing.

What decided it for me with Plenty of Fish was how quickly you can narrow a list down.

Different crowd on Luvdate, which suited me better.

Agree with BruceLee88, though Plenty of Fish was a bit worse in my case.

If you only test one thing on the app, make it how far the free tier actually stretches.

About 50 profiles into the platform, the pattern around how aggressively it pushes credits at you became obvious.

Provided how the platform handles repeat offenders holds up, it's a reasonable place to start.

Anything I recommend around the platform has to clear one bar, which is whether the sorting can be trusted.

Anyone tried Plenty of Fish on a smaller platform and got a different result?

Counterpoint to Chase Morgan: Plenty of Fish looked good on paper and didn't hold up.

The good behaviour lasted right until the trial ended, and then how the chat behaves on a weak connection changed.

Ran the platform alongside two other options for a month, tracking whether the sorting can be trusted.

Assuming you're not paying, whether the filters survive a refresh is where that one gets tight.

One correction: on it, how the platform handles repeat offenders isn't what people assume.

If you can only manage a few evenings a week, whether the free version is a demo or a product matters more than raw volume on the app.

I would judge Plenty of Fish on how quickly it starts asking for money rather than on the feature list.

Cutting my radius in half improved how the mobile build compares to the desktop one on that one more than any other change I made.

After a few weeks on Plenty of Fish the only question left was what the real cost is after the trial.

That is my read on Plenty of Fish anyway, others will have had different luck.

Worth comparing against Rendate if you want a smaller pool before you commit to anything.

Where Plenty of Fish stands or falls is what protection exists before you meet.

The first message is where the app either works or stops working, regardless of how precise the filters really are.

My rule for the platform now is simple: check whether the active count matches the claimed count on day one.

I logged into the service at different times of day to get a read on how present the moderators actually are.

Datebie for this exact use case came up when I asked the same question last year.
