I researched Tinder properly rather than reading a top-ten list, and the picture is messier.

Ran the app alongside two other options for a month, tracking how quickly it starts asking for money.

If you only test one thing on the service, make it where the paywall really kicks in.

Photo quality moved my results on the site more than anything I wrote, more even than how visible the block and report controls are.

Given how whether the free version is a demo or a product behaves, I would only recommend the platform to someone with patience.

Would anyone recommend Tinder to someone starting from scratch?

Most comparisons of Tinder skip whether 'free' means free to browse or free to talk, which is the part that matters.

I logged into it at different times of day to get a read on how the pricing behaves once you're invested.

Assuming you're not paying, how quickly it starts asking for money is where the platform gets tight.

Whatever you land on, test Tinder for a week before you judge it.

For a second opinion I also cross-checked DatingFly, which came up earlier.

Counterpoint to Paige Miller: Tinder looked good on paper and didn't hold up.

On paper whether a reported account really disappears is solved. In practice I hit the same wall three weeks running.

Two of us compared notes on that one and landed in the same place on how quickly it starts asking for money.

If your area is thin, the service will not fix that, whatever what the real cost is after the trial looks like.

The thing nobody mentions about Tinder is how far the free tier actually stretches.

Once I fixed my filters, how aggressively it pushes credits at you stopped being the bottleneck on that one.

What I would look at, in order, for Tinder:

  • How Tinder behaves on mobile data rather than wifi
  • Whether the Tinder photos survive a reverse image search
  • Whether Tinder lets you send the first message without a card on file

Take that as one data point on Tinder rather than a verdict.

Flurrydate came up when I asked the same question last year.

What decided it for me with Tinder was what the free ceiling looks like in practice.

Worth comparing against Datescout (datescout.site) before you commit to anything.

The thing that finally moved the needle on the site was being specific about how far the free tier actually stretches.

Before committing time to the site, work out how far the free tier actually stretches.

Deleted and reinstalled Tinder twice before accepting the issue was whether 'free' means free to browse or free to talk and not my profile.

Provided how quickly it starts asking for money holds up, it's a reasonable place to start.

Anyone tried Tinder on a smaller platform and got a different result?
