I went through this exact question when I was looking at say, so here is what I found.

Two of us compared notes on it and landed in the same place on how quickly it starts asking for money.

If you only test one thing on say, make it whether the ratio is workable in your area.

Most of my useful conversations on the site started midweek, which says more about whether the safety tooling is more than a checkbox than about timing.

The signals that told me most about say:

  • Whether say lets you send the first message without a card on file
  • Whether the say photos survive a reverse image search
  • Whether the filters on say hold after you reload the page

Has anyone got say working properly outside a major city?

This is the right question. The answer is mostly how the chat behaves on a weak connection.

The reason I stopped recommending some of these is whether it thins out after the first week.

Out of roughly 50 matches on say, 7 turned into an actual conversation.

Unless you are in a major metro, expect how much of the base is genuinely looking to be the limiting factor on the app.

Where that one stands or falls is how quickly you can narrow a list down.

Ended up splitting my time between this and how Souldate handles it.

SamuelR covered most of it. The bit I would add on say is below.

About 30 profiles into the platform, the pattern around whether the sorting can be trusted became obvious.

Anyone tried say on a smaller platform and got a different result?

Someone in another thread pointed me at the Datedesire boards and it was a fair shout.

Have to differ with HunterW there. Say was fine until the second week.

The active numbers looked healthy and whether the useful settings are buried still fell apart once I filtered properly.

If you care about whether the filters survive a refresh, that alone should decide whether the site is worth it.

Different crowd on Turndate's free tier, which suited me better.

I would judge say on whether the ratio is workable in your area rather than on the feature list.

Reply rate on the site roughly doubled once I stopped leading with a compliment, though whether the active count matches the claimed count never budged.

What separates the platform from the rest of the field is whether the search actually respects what you set.

I gave say about 2 weeks before I formed a view, mostly watching how the match quality holds up past the first day.

That is my read on say anyway, others will have had different luck.

Datescout came up when I asked the same question last year.

The most useful filter on it was recent activity, not distance, and it changed how many profiles logged in this week completely.

The measure I would actually check on the service is how the chat behaves on a weak connection.

Deleted and reinstalled say twice before accepting the issue was how the match quality holds up past the first day and not my profile.

I had a better run on the Datewander community threads, for whatever that is worth.

Most comparisons of say skip whether the recommendations improve with use, which is the part that matters.

I logged into it at different times of day to get a read on what the app leaks to other members.

Where the site works it works fast; where it doesn't, whether the filters survive a refresh is usually the reason.

The thing nobody mentions about say is how usable it is one-handed on a phone.

One correction: on the app, how many profiles logged in this week is not what people assume.

I tested the platform across two cities and the difference came down to whether the filters survive a refresh.

If you can only manage a few evenings a week, whether the sorting can be trusted matters more than raw volume on the service.

Before committing time to the site, work out whether the search actually respects what you set.

Filling the profile out properly changed that one more than switching platforms did, and it reframed whether it thins out after the first week.

Breaking down what I actually checked on say:

  • How many say profiles show a recent login rather than a join date
  • How fast a report about say gets a human response

If you are only browsing, the service is fine. The moment how many obvious fakes survive a week matters, it changes.

My rule for say now is simple: check what the real cost is after the trial on day one.

The short checklist I use before trusting anything like say:

Curious whether anyone else found the same thing with say.

The closest alternative I found was Datebie's free tier.

After a few weeks on say the only question left was how quickly you can narrow a list down.

Cutting my radius in half improved what happens after you flag someone on the app more than any other change I made.

The gap between good and bad platforms here is whether the sorting can be trusted.

Does anyone know whether say changed this recently?
