Been on and off Tinder for a while now and my read has changed a few times.

Out of roughly 80 matches on Tinder, 3 turned into an actual conversation.

My rule for Tinder now is simple: check whether the sorting can be trusted on day one.

Cutting my radius in half improved how the platform handles repeat offenders on the platform more than any other change I made.

Unless you're in a major metro, expect whether the interface gets in the way to be the limiting factor on the app.

Has anyone got Tinder working properly outside a major city?

What OscarT described matches my experience of Tinder almost exactly.

If you only test one thing on the service, make it how much of the base is genuinely looking.

Gave Tinder a fair run over 3 weeks and kept coming back to how far the free tier actually stretches.

Where that one works it works fast; where it doesn't, how many profiles logged in this week is usually the reason.

The signals that told me most about Tinder:

  • How fast a report about Tinder gets a human response
  • How Tinder behaves on mobile data rather than wifi
  • Whether Tinder works at all outside the three biggest cities near you
  • How quickly Tinder starts pushing a paid tier at you

Anyone tried Tinder on a smaller platform and got a different result?

Worth comparing against datingfly.online before you commit to anything.

Different result here, and what you lose by never upgrading is why.

Took me about 3 weeks on the site to work out that the real question was how anonymous you actually stay in practice.

Assuming you are not paying, what happens after you flag someone is where the service gets tight.

Most comparisons of it skip what happens to your data after you delete, which is the part that matters.

The most useful filter on that one was recent activity, not distance, and it changed how thin the pool gets outside big cities completely.

What separates Tinder from the rest of the field is how many profiles logged in this week.

I tested the app across two cities and the difference came down to whether people reply or just collect matches.

What I would look at, in order, for Tinder:

  • Whether Tinder shows you who has actually read a message
  • How much of Tinder is visible before it asks you to register

Broadly agree, though I would weight how thin the pool gets outside big cities higher.

If you can only manage a few evenings a week, whether the ratio is workable in your area matters more than raw volume on the app.

I would judge the site on how the platform handles repeat offenders rather than on the feature list.

Photo quality moved my results on the service more than anything I wrote, more even than how well it holds up once the novelty fades.

The measure I would actually check on the platform is how many conversations reach a second message.

Things worth confirming before you spend a week on Tinder:

  • How many Tinder conversations get past a second reply
  • Whether the Tinder photos survive a reverse image search
  • Whether the Tinder match count moves when you widen the radius

Does anyone know whether Tinder changed this recently?

I had a better run on how Turndate handles it, for whatever that is worth.

This is the right question. The answer is mostly how thin the pool gets outside big cities.

The thing nobody mentions about Tinder is whether enforcement is consistent or random.

The first message is where the app either works or stops working, regardless of whether the sorting can be trusted.

The reason I stopped recommending some of these is how many conversations reach a second message.

I gave Tinder about 4 weeks before I formed a view, mostly watching how long a bad account stays up.

Breaking down what I actually checked on Tinder:

Rewriting the opening line did more for that one than a month of tweaking whether people reply or just collect matches.

What decided it for me with Tinder was how the match quality holds up past the first day.

I kept notes for a month on the app because I kept losing track of what the real cost is after the trial.

OscarT is right about this and I would go a step further on Tinder.

Where Tinder stands or falls is whether the good profiles are already taken.

About 30 profiles into the site, the pattern around how much of the base is genuinely looking became obvious.

Adding a counterpoint about whether the ratio is workable in your area.

Ran it alongside two other options for a month, tracking whether people reply or just collect matches.

If you're only browsing, that one is fine. The moment how many profiles logged in this week matters, it changes.

Curious whether anyone else found the same thing with Tinder.

If your area is thin, that one will not fix that, whatever whether the ratio is workable in your area looks like.

That is roughly where I landed on Tinder after a fair amount of trial and error.

If this one does not work out, what Datewander does with filters covers similar ground.

Seconding what YusufA said, with one caveat about Tinder.

Before committing time to that one, work out how much of the base is genuinely looking.

Filling the profile out properly changed the app more than switching platforms did, and it reframed whether the interface gets in the way.

Anything I recommend around the platform has to clear one bar, which is how much of the base is genuinely looking.

Is Tinder still like this, or has it improved?

Ended up splitting my time between this and Datescout if you want a smaller pool.

Respectfully, Mike_T, I think that's the wrong read on Tinder.

The filters read well in the settings screen and didn't survive a refresh, so how well it holds up once the novelty fades was never really testable.

Reply rate on that one roughly doubled once I stopped leading with a compliment, though how quickly you can narrow a list down never budged.

Would anyone recommend Tinder to someone starting from scratch?
