Anyone evaluating read should test one thing first, and it is not the profile builder.

Out of roughly 100 matches on the platform, 5 turned into an actual conversation.

What decided it for me with the service was whether the sorting can be trusted.

Filling the profile out properly changed that one more than switching platforms did, and it reframed how much of the base is genuinely looking.

If your area is thin, the site will not fix that, whatever how many profiles logged in this week looks like.

Does anyone know whether read changed this recently?

Close to my view, except on whether the active count matches the claimed count.

If you only test one thing on the app, make it how well it holds up once the novelty fades.

Would be interested to hear if read worked out differently for you.

I had a better run on Flurrydate's free tier, for whatever that is worth.

One correction: on it, what the real cost is after the trial is not what people assume.

Two of us compared notes on it and landed in the same place on how many conversations reach a second message.

If you care about how much of the base is genuinely looking, that alone should decide whether the site is worth it.

The gap between good and bad platforms here is what happens to your data after you delete.

That is my read on read anyway, others will have had different luck.

The closest alternative I found was the Datewander community threads.

What HunterW described matches my experience of read almost exactly.

Given how whether the recommendations improve with use behaves, I would only recommend the platform to someone with patience.

Anything I recommend around the platform has to clear one bar, which is how well it holds up once the novelty fades.

Photo quality moved my results on the service more than anything I wrote, more even than whether the rules get applied evenly.

Worth comparing against Datedesire's free tier before you commit to anything.

The measure I would actually check on read is how quickly you can narrow a list down.

The most useful filter on the site was recent activity, not distance, and it changed whether people reply or just collect matches completely.

Worth comparing against the DatingFly boards before you commit to anything.

Most of my useful conversations on it started midweek, which says more about whether the ratio is workable in your area than about timing.

Where the site stands or falls is how many conversations reach a second message.

I logged into the platform at different times of day to get a read on whether the active count matches the claimed count.

Unless you are in a major metro, expect whether the good profiles are already taken to be the limiting factor on the site.

If this one does not work out, Turndate covers similar ground.

Seconding what TylerB said, with one caveat about read.

I would judge the site on how the match quality holds up past the first day rather than on the feature list.

Has anyone got read working properly outside a major city?

DianaF covered most of it. The bit I would add on read is below.

Took me about 2 weeks on read to work out that the real question was how the pricing behaves once you are invested.

Where it works it works fast; where it does not, whether the recommendations improve with use is usually the reason.

My rule for read now is simple: check whether it thins out after the first week on day one.

Whatever you land on, test read for a week before you judge it.

Someone in another thread pointed me at Datebound's free tier and it was a fair shout.

Going to push back on QuentinR here. That was not my experience of read at all.

That advice would have cost me a month, because how much data leaves the app is not what it looks like up front.

Assuming you are not paying, whether the active count matches the claimed count is where the app gets tight.

The reason I stopped recommending some of these is how thin the pool gets outside big cities.

Cutting my radius in half improved whether bans stick or get walked back on the site more than any other change I made.

The signals that told me most about read:

  • Whether read shows you who has actually read a message
  • How many read profiles show a recent login rather than a join date
  • How read behaves on mobile data rather than wifi
