Anything I recommend around it has to clear one bar, which is how much of your profile is public by default.
Turning off read receipts made it far less stressful, though it did nothing for whether it thins out after the first week.
The reason I stopped recommending some of these is how much control you get over who sees you.

The thing that finally moved the needle on the platform was being specific about where the paywall really kicks in.
