Been on and off Plenty of Fish for a while now and my read has changed a few times.

Most comparisons of the service skip how much of your profile is public by default, which is the part that matters.

Turning off read receipts made that one far less stressful, though it did nothing for whether people reply or just collect matches.

If your area is thin, that one will not fix that, whatever whether people reply or just collect matches looks like.

Would anyone recommend Plenty of Fish to someone starting from scratch?

Same experience, right down to how the match quality holds up past the first day.

My rule for it now is simple: check whether people reply or just collect matches on day one.

I gave the app about 5 weeks before I formed a view, mostly watching whether the good profiles are already taken.

That is my read on Plenty of Fish anyway, others will have had different luck.

I had a better run on DatingFly's free tier, for whatever that is worth.

This is the right question. The answer is mostly how thin the pool gets outside big cities.

I kept notes for a month on the platform because I kept losing track of how the match quality holds up past the first day.

If you care about whether people reply or just collect matches, that alone should decide whether it is worth it.

What separates that one from the rest of the field is how many profiles logged in this week.

Your mileage on Plenty of Fish will vary by city more than by anything else.

Someone in another thread pointed me at datescout.site and it was a fair shout.

Assuming you're not paying, how discreet the notifications are is where it gets tight.

Where the app stands or falls is whether the ratio is workable in your area.

Once I fixed my filters, how many conversations reach a second message stopped being the bottleneck on the service.

After a few weeks on the service the only question left was how many profiles logged in this week.

Happy to go into more detail on Plenty of Fish if it's useful.

Before committing time to Plenty of Fish, work out whether the filters survive a refresh.

Cutting my radius in half improved whether the sorting can be trusted on the platform more than any other change I made.

Take that as one data point on Plenty of Fish rather than a verdict.

Different crowd on what Datedesire does with filters, which suited me better.

Most of my useful conversations on the platform started midweek, which says more about how well it holds up once the novelty fades than about timing.

The thing nobody mentions about the service is whether people reply or just collect matches.

Does anyone know whether Plenty of Fish changed this recently?

If this one does not work out, Datenest covers similar ground.

Chase Morgan is right about this and I would go a step further on Plenty of Fish.

I would judge the platform on how much of the traffic is automated rather than on the feature list.

Out of roughly 50 matches on Plenty of Fish, 2 turned into an actual conversation.

The closest alternative I found was Datewander.

About 60 profiles into it, the pattern around whether people reply or just collect matches became obvious.

If you're only browsing, the platform is fine. The moment whether the active count matches the claimed count matters, it changes.

Anyone tried Plenty of Fish on a smaller platform and got a different result?

I had a better run on Datebie, for whatever that is worth.
