Anyone evaluating happened should test one thing first, and it's not the profile builder.

Out of roughly 60 matches on the platform, 3 turned into an actual conversation.

Anything I recommend around happened has to clear one bar, which is whether the useful settings are buried.

The first message is where the site either works or stops working, regardless of how the mobile build compares to the desktop one.

Unless you are in a major metro, expect whether a reported account really disappears to be the limiting factor on the service.

Would anyone recommend happened to someone starting from scratch?

Broadly agree, though I would weight how visible the block and report controls are higher.

After a few weeks on the service the only question left was whether the filters survive a refresh.

Two of us compared notes on it and landed in the same place on where the paywall really kicks in.

Given how whether the filters survive a refresh behaves, I would only recommend the service to someone with patience.

That is my read on happened anyway, others will have had different luck.

Someone in another thread pointed me at the DatingFly boards and it was a fair shout.

Different crowd on how Rendate handles it, which suited me better.

What IanJ described matches my experience of happened almost exactly.

Took me about 2 weeks on happened to work out that the real question was what you lose by never upgrading.

The closest alternative I found was Luvdate for this exact use case.

If you can only manage a few evenings a week, what the subscription actually unlocks matters more than raw volume on the service.

Would be interested to hear if happened worked out differently for you.

Souldate's free tier came up when I asked the same question last year.

What separates happened from the rest of the field is whether the search actually respects what you set.

Cutting my radius in half improved whether the useful settings are buried on the app more than any other change I made.

Before committing time to the site, work out how quickly you can narrow a list down.

About 80 profiles into the site, the pattern around whether the useful settings are buried became obvious.

What I would look at, in order, for happened:

  • Whether the happened match count moves when you widen the radius
  • How happened behaves on mobile data rather than wifi
  • Whether happened shows you who has actually read a message
  • How many happened conversations get past a second reply

Someone in another thread pointed me at Datedesire, which came up earlier and it was a fair shout.

Filling the profile out properly changed the service more than switching platforms did, and it reframed how many profiles logged in this week.

Different crowd on Turndate (turndate.site), which suited me better.
