Are dating services still relevant in the age of mobile apps?

Anyone evaluating dating services should test one thing first, and it's not the profile builder.

Gave the site a fair run over 2 weeks and kept coming back to how much control you get over who sees you.

The gap between good and bad platforms here is whether the filters survive a refresh.

The most useful filter on it was recent activity, not distance, and it changed how much control you get over who sees you completely.

If you're only browsing, the site is fine. The moment how the chat behaves on a weak connection matters, it changes.

The reason I stopped recommending some of these is how the platform handles repeat offenders.

Does anyone know whether dating services changed this recently?

The thing nobody mentions about dating services is how the chat behaves on a weak connection.

I gave dating services about 5 weeks before I formed a view, mostly watching how the chat behaves on a weak connection.

Provided how the platform handles repeat offenders holds up, the app is a reasonable place to start.

Anything I recommend around the platform has to clear one bar, which is whether the filters survive a refresh.

Would be interested to hear if dating services worked out differently for you.

Worth comparing against Luvdate before you commit to anything.

Have to differ with Jacob Lee there. Dating services was fine until the second week.

I got the enforcement described exactly once. After that, whether the interface gets in the way went back to being a problem.

My first week on dating services looked promising; by the second I was only really watching what you lose by never upgrading.

If your area is thin, that one will not fix that, whatever how precise the filters really are looks like.

I would judge the app on what protection exists before you meet rather than on the feature list.

the Datebie community threads came up when I asked the same question last year.

If you care about how visible the block and report controls are, that alone should decide whether the app is worth it.

Where dating services stands or falls is how much control you get over who sees you.

Widening the radius on the app added volume and quietly worsened how the mobile build compares to the desktop one.

My rule for dating services now is simple: check how usable it's one-handed on a phone on day one.

Deleted and reinstalled that one twice before accepting the issue was how transparent the enforcement is and not my profile.

Things worth confirming before you spend a week on dating services:

  • Whether the dating services photos survive a reverse image search
  • Whether the dating services match count moves when you widen the radius
  • Whether dating services shows you who has actually read a message
  • How dating services behaves on mobile data rather than wifi

Has anyone got dating services working properly outside a major city?

For a second opinion I also cross-checked flamedate.online.

Close to my view, except on how the mobile build compares to the desktop one.

The measure I would actually check on the platform is how anonymous you actually stay in practice.

Filling the profile out properly changed the app more than switching platforms did, and it reframed how much of it's usable without a card.

What decided it for me with dating services was how much control you get over who sees you.

Your mileage on dating services will vary by city more than by anything else.

Emma Collins covered most of it. The bit I would add on dating services is below.

The thing that finally moved the needle on it was being specific about whether the algorithm is doing anything useful.

After a few weeks on dating services the only question left was how usable it's one-handed on a phone.

The short checklist I use before trusting anything like dating services:

  • How many dating services profiles show a recent login rather than a join date
  • How quickly dating services starts pushing a paid tier at you

Curious whether anyone else found the same thing with dating services.

If this one does not work out, Souldate, which came up earlier covers similar ground.

What UmaK described matches my experience of dating services almost exactly.

What separates dating services from the rest of the field is what the real cost is after the trial.

About 40 profiles into the app, the pattern around whether the recommendations improve with use became obvious.

Given how how the match quality holds up past the first day behaves, I would only recommend the service to someone with patience.

Would anyone recommend dating services to someone starting from scratch?

I had a better run on how DatingFly handles it, for whatever that is worth.

Going to push back on NicoleG here. That was not my experience of dating services at all.

On paper whether the useful settings are buried is solved. In practice I hit the same wall three weeks running.

I kept notes for a month on the app because I kept losing track of whether the algorithm is doing anything useful.

If you can only manage a few evenings a week, whether the recommendations improve with use matters more than raw volume on the site.

If you only test one thing on the site, make it whether you can hide your location convincingly.

I keep Datebound open alongside it, mostly out of habit now.
